ENGLAND’S World Cup semi-final will be shown to 30,000 fans at London’s Hyde Park. The Three Lions take on Croatia for a place in Sunday’s final after easing past Sweden on Saturday. Wednesday's event will be the biggest public screening of a game in 22 years since England lost to Germany at Euro 96. And in a rare display of cross-party consensus, Labour’s London Mayor and the Government are teaming up with the Royal Parks and the Football Association to present a live outdoor screening of the big match. Up to 30,000 tickets will be available through a ballot system from 4 pm until midnight on Monday, July 8. Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “World Cup fever has gripped London and the rest of the nation and we have all been swept away by the fantastic exploits of Gareth Southgate’s team. Amanda Holden asks Ulrika Jonsson: ‘My, my how can Swedes resist us?’ ahead of World Cup quarter-final
ENGLISH rose Amanda Holden tells Sweden’s Ulrika Jonsson to “come and Abba go if you think you’re hard enough” ahead of today’s World Cup quarter-final clash. The TV favourites jokingly squared up on the set of This Morning ahead of the Winner Takes It All fixture in the Russian city of Samara. But Ulrika, 50, who moved to Britain aged 12, admitted she will Take A Chance on supporting both nations — although her four kids will cheer her native Sweden. She said: “Sweden are fantastic, but for my own sake, living in England, I also hope England win. “I was there in France in 98 when they went out on penalties to Argentina, and the feeling of deflation was horrendous. “It will be easier for me if England lose this time. As long as it doesn’t go to penalties, because then I will lose my meatballs.” The Sun has already caused security guards in Stockholm to exclaim “Mamma Mia!” after sneaking an England flag next … [Read more...] about Amanda Holden asks Ulrika Jonsson: ‘My, my how can Swedes resist us?’ ahead of World Cup quarter-final

TINO ASPRILLA has never needed much of an excuse to have a party. But the fun-loving former forward does not think he will be the only Colombian going crazy tomorrow night. Asprilla, whose wild ways made him a cult hero during his two years at Newcastle, will be in the stands at the Spartak Stadium for his country’s crunch clash with England. And the 57-cap ex-Colombia striker said: “The fans are very excited about the game against England. There is huge interest back home. “The whole country comes to a standstill when the team plays. “If we win, there is going to be some party!” England star Dele Alli talks to the media about Colombia, James Rodriguez and the defeat to Belgium You just know Asprilla, 48, will be front and centre of any celebrations in Moscow. Football's coming home. So sang The Lightning Seeds, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel ahead of England's campaign at the Euros in 1996. It didn't. Nor did it in France 98, Euro 2000 or the World Cup in Japan/Korea 2002. And again in 2004, Germany in 2006, South Africa in 2010, Euros in 2012 and Brazil in 2014. As of 2018, the years of hurt total 52. Is this the year? Gareth Southgate's side have won their first two games and have already qualified for the knockout stages with a group fixture to spare. Excitement rages. Could they go all the way? Our football writers Rob Tanner and James Sharpe offer differing opinions... Rob Tanner – it's going home Naturally as you get older you become increasingly cynical. Now, this isn’t anything to do with physiology or the ageing process as the body and mind slows down, it is because that youthful hope and exuberance gets dimmed and eventually extinguished by the harsh realities of life. In short, it is due to experience and when it … [Read more...] about Is football coming home – our writers on England’s World Cup hopes
