Rescuers plan how to extract beluga whale from River Seine
Rescue workers are planning how to extract a beluga whale from the River Seine. The Arctic mammal has found itself trapped between a set of locks in a stretch of the watercourse between Paris and Rouen. Efforts are continuing to try and get the whale to eat, but they have so far failed. The marine conservationist group Sea Shepherd France said on Monday that "feeding attempts are continuing in parallel to finding a solution to get it out of the lock in the best conditions". Over the weekend, the beluga was given a "vitamin cocktail" in an attempt to keep its nutrition up. Advertisement Lamya Essemlali, president Sea Shepherd France, told a news conference this weekend: "It is really extremely thin. Its bones are protruding. I don't know if it's already too late". Attempts to feed the animal - with both dead herrings and live trouts - have proved fruitless. The Soviet Family
on the World Today IN the first years after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Russian leaders believed that by removing both the legal and economic bonds of family life they would make possible the development of “true monogamy” and “true family unity.” This conception underlay the Soviet Family Code of 1926, in which both marriage and divorce were made a matter of private agreement. Marriage was treated in law as a de facto relationship; registration of marriage, although encouraged, was not essential. Similarly, divorce could be accomplished merely by factual separation — although, again, the husband or wife was encouraged to notify the Bureau of Vital Statistics, at least bypostcard. The liberalization of marriage and divorce was part of a larger program leading to the ultimate “withering away of the family”— that is, of the family as a legal and economic institution. Inheritance was at first declared to be abolished, and was later reintroduced with very severe … [Read more...] about The Soviet Family
Lost Soviet Union ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Movie Discovered | The Daily Wire
The 1978 animated movie and Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning early-2000s epic are not the only film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s timeless classic “The Lord of the Rings.” Though dramatically lacking in production quality, a version of the fantasy epic was created in the Soviet Union prior to its fall and was thought to have been lost until just recently. The made-for-TV film was created in 1991 and is “the only adaptation of his Lord of the Rings trilogy believed to have been made in the Soviet Union,” according to The Guardian . “Aired 10 years before the release of the first installment of Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, the low-budget film appears ripped from another age: the costumes and sets are rudimentary, the special effects are ludicrous, and many of the scenes look more like a theatre production than a feature-length film,” reported the outlet. “The score, composed by Andrei Romanov of the rock band Akvarium, also lends a distinctly Soviet ambience to the production, … [Read more...] about Lost Soviet Union ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Movie Discovered | The Daily Wire
“Terrifying” study links risk of over 200 infectious diseases to climate hazards like flooding, heat waves and drought
Climate hazards such as flooding, heat waves and drought have worsened more than half of the hundreds of known infectious diseases in people, including malaria, hantavirus, cholera and anthrax, a study says. Researchers looked through the medical literature of established cases of illnesses and found that 218 out of the known 375 human infectious diseases, or 58%, seemed to be made worse by one of 10 types of extreme weather connected to climate change , according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change . Doctors, going back to Hippocrates, have long connected disease to weather, but this study shows how widespread the influence of climate is on human health . "If climate is changing, the risk of these diseases are changing," said study co-author Dr. Jonathan Patz, director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Doctors, such as Patz, said they need to think of the diseases as symptoms of a sick Earth. … [Read more...] about “Terrifying” study links risk of over 200 infectious diseases to climate hazards like flooding, heat waves and drought
Opinion | Why breastfeeding is the greatest public health policy of all time
Breastfeeding has long been the gold standard for infant nutrition. The American Academy of Pediatrics , American Academy of Family Physicians , American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists , and World Health Organization all recommend it. Thus, the recent New York Times report of U.S. interference in the World Health Assembly 's attempt to adopt the resolution that "mother's milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes" alarmed many concerned about public health. As a pediatrician and a nutritionist, I have provided direct patient care to breastfeeding mothers and children and also advocated for breastfeeding policies and practices. The scientific research in support of breastfeeding is overwhelmingly clear, and most mothers in the U.S. have heard that message and learned from it. Marketing and sales of infant formula have surged in developing countries, however. That's … [Read more...] about Opinion | Why breastfeeding is the greatest public health policy of all time

She is undoubtedly best known for her starring role in the 1978 film Grease , in which she appeared opposite John Travolta’s Danny as Sandy. Why Europe is suffering a worse inflation crisis than Britain
If the longest recession since the financial crisis and deepest fall in living standards since the 1960s were not bad enough, Britain is also facing economic humiliation on the international stage – if you believe Government critics. Keir Starmer last month accused former chancellor Rishi Sunak and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of leaving the UK with an “appalling joint economic legacy of the highest inflation and the lowest growth in the G7”. The G7 comparison paints Britain’s painful 9.4pc annual price rise in June as a remarkable outlier, but that does not depict the full picture. Firstly, much of the G7 is in a very similar position: US inflation is at 9.1pc and Germany at 8.2pc. Secondly, the UK is suffering less inflation than the average EU nation – price rises averaged 9.6pc in June across the bloc. Figures on the continent range from 6.1pc in Malta – high by historic standards but unusually low today – to a scorching 22pc in Estonia, according to data from … [Read more...] about Why Europe is suffering a worse inflation crisis than Britain
