A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
A-level grades in the UK are lower than the past two years but still remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. Hundreds of thousands of pupils across England, Wales and Northern Ireland nervously collected their results today , one week ahead of GCSE students. It was the first time they’d sat exams since the Covid pandemic, and they expected to face tough competition to get into university this year. Around 40% of students were expected to use the clearing system – used by universities and colleges to fill remaining courses when applicants don’t secure their first choice. The Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS) chief executive Clare Marchant warned today will not be ‘pain-free’ for all and that offer-making has been ‘more conservative’ this year. Grades were expected to drop back from 2020 and 2021 levels – when pupils were assessed by their teachers. This year’s grade aim to reflect a midway point between last year’s record surge in high grades … [Read more...] about A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
Jennette McCurdy Says Her Old Ariana Grande Jealousy Is ‘Comedy Gold’
A real one. Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage Jennette McCurdy tells it like it is. In her new book, I’m Glad My Mom Died , the iCarly star takes that candor to the extreme. From the memoir’s provocative title to its straightforward present-tense description of her allegedly abusive mother and creepy execs at Nickelodeon, McCurdy leans into the dark, and sometimes darkly comic, truths of her past. And one of those truths lies in the highly publicized excerpts where she admits that her Sam and Cat co-star Ariana Grande’s ascendent career made the then-21-year-old “jealous.” “The week where I was told Ariana would not be here at all, and that they would write around her absence this episode by having her character be locked in a box,” McCurdy writes in the book. “So I have to turn down movies while Ariana’s off whistle-toning at the Billboard Music Awards? Fuck. This.” The kicker? “Ariana misses work in pursuit of her music career while I act with a box,” McCurdy jokes. … [Read more...] about Jennette McCurdy Says Her Old Ariana Grande Jealousy Is ‘Comedy Gold’
Salma al-Shehab: University of Leeds ‘deeply concerned’ for student sentenced to 34 years in prison in Saudi Arabia
The University of Leeds says it is "deeply concerned" that one of its students has been sentenced to 34 years in prison in Saudi Arabia for following activists and dissidents on Twitter. Human rights activist Salma al-Shehab was handed the sentence in a ruling that has been decried by campaigners who say it was the "longest issued against female or male activists". She had initially been sentenced to three years in prison for using the internet to "cause public unrest and destabilise civil and national security" - but was given the new sentence on Monday after an appeals court was asked to consider other alleged crimes. A spokesperson for University of Leeds said: "We are deeply concerned to learn of this recent development in Salma's case and we are seeking advice on whether there is anything we can do to support her. "Our thoughts remain with Salma, her family, and her friends among our close-knit community of postgraduate researchers." The 34-year-old is a … [Read more...] about Salma al-Shehab: University of Leeds ‘deeply concerned’ for student sentenced to 34 years in prison in Saudi Arabia
