A day after a searing investigation into Facebook by the New York Times, the company's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, is defending herself and the social media giant. In her first interview since the story was published, Sandberg told CBS This Morning co-host Norah O'Donnell she did not know about an effort described by the Times to publish stories critical of other tech companies, an apparent attempt to deflect attention away from Facebook. The campaign was reportedly orchestrated by the consulting firm Definers Public Affairs, a Republican opposition research group hired by Facebook. "We absolutely did not pay anyone to create fake news – that they have assured me was not happening. And again, we're doing a thorough look into what happened but they have assured me that we were not paying anyone to either write or promote anything that was false. And that's very important," Sandberg said. The Times also reported that the firm tried to tie critics of Facebook to George … [Read more...] about Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg: “We absolutely did not pay anyone to create fake news”
THOUSANDS of Brits are today handed a £500 pay hike as the Living Wage rises to £9 per hour. Around 180,000 workers will see their wages rise as a result of the new rate, set by an independent charity. In London, the Living Wage is rising to £10.55 an hour, up from £10.20. There are 4,700 employers which have committed to pay their workers the Living Wage - which is higher than the legal minimum. The rate, which is not to be confused with the "national living wage" dictated by the Government, is set with reference to the real cost of living. The rise from £8.75 to £9 outside London will mean that anyone working 40 hours a week on the Living Wage will get more than £500 extra over the next year. The companies which have signed up to pay the rate include household names such as Google, Ikea, Nationwide, Oxfam and Heathrow airport. Several football clubs such as Liverpool and Everton are also committed to the movement. Some 23 developers are still receiving incomes from Nama, with the highest earner receiving €195,000 a year. Three more get an "allowance" worth €180,000 annually, according to figures released under the Freedom of Information act by the asset management agency. Altogether, the 23 developers - who manage sites on behalf of Nama - received an average €100,000 each. Of those, 10 received a six-figure salary, with one on €133,000, two getting €120,000, another on €110,000, and two developers paid €100,000 each. The latest figures also list 13 developers who are in receipt of annual allowances worth less than €100,000. Nama said the payment of allowances to "debtors" was part of its efforts to get the best possible financial returns from its loans. The figures come just a day after the Irish Independent reported on the scale of land owned by Nama that could be used to tackle the housing crisis. The agency has enough land available to build … [Read more...] about €2.3m bill as Nama still pays six-figure sums to developers
Benefit reforms have been linked with a fall in Middlesbrough folk paying their council tax. Middlesbrough Council had the third worst council tax collection rate in the country last year - with £4,292,000 uncollected in 2017/18. But a report prepared from the council’s ad hoc scrutiny panel found many residents were still trying to pay back debts from previous bills. The report linked deprivation with poor collection performance and pointed to a decline in collection rates - from 96% in 2012/13 to 92.8% in 2017/18 - coinciding with changes to the benefit system. It added: “The changes to welfare have a direct correlation to residents’ ability to pay their council tax as well the council’s ability to collect it. The most notable change was the introduction of Universal Credit .” The report also warned Universal Credit, which was rolled out in Middlesbrough at the start of the month, could have the “most significant impact” on the ability … [Read more...] about Universal Credit reforms linked to people not paying council tax
