A man described the start of his holiday to Spain as a "nightmare" after flight passengers' bags were left strewn all over the airport floor. Phil Burke, who flew in from Manchester to celebrate a friend's birthday, had just landed in Malaga and was about to pick up his luggage when he saw the sea of scattered suitcases. The conveyor belt had stopped working, it emerged - so passengers had to sort the bags themselves and no staff were on hand to help. Mr Burke, who lives in Rochdale and works as councillor, told Manchester Evening News some holidaymakers even stuck their heads through the entrance to the conveyor belt to ask for assistance, but go no response. "It’s been a bit of a nightmare," he said. “We were 20 minutes late with leaving, but we got through security alright. We went downstairs [at Malaga] and two conveyors had stopped. There were 60 or 70 bags all over the floor. "People had to go through the bags themselves. The Prime Minister did not rule out introducing a levy on the excess profits of energy firms but he made clear his opposition to the policy. He told LBC Radio: “I don’t like them [windfall taxes]. I don’t think they are the right way forward. I want those companies to make big, big investment.” The Government has argued that imposing an additional tax on the companies would damage their ability to invest in crucial new energy sources for the UK. Untrained passenger lands Florida plane after pilot falls ill
Published 3 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A passenger with no flying experience landed a plane in Florida after the pilot passed out. In a audio recording from the flight, the passenger, Darren Harrison, can be heard telling air traffic control a "serious situation" was unfolding. An air traffic controller - who also teaches new pilots - helped guide the man down to Palm Beach International Airport just after noon on Tuesday. The two later met on the tarmac for a hug. The pilot of the Cessna 208 had been flying to Florida from the Bahamas when he told his two passengers he wasn't feeling well, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He fell against the controls, putting the small aircraft into a nosedive and a sharp turn. The nature of the medical emergency has not been revealed, but the pilot is being treated in hospital. Passenger lands plane at Humberside Airport after pilot falls ill
Published 8 October 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A passenger has landed an aeroplane at Humberside Airport after the pilot fell ill at the controls. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the airport after the pilot collapsed and a distress call was made from the light aircraft. Two flying instructors were called in to advise the passenger how to bring the plane down. One of them, Roy Murray, said the passenger had no flying experience and did a "remarkable job". The passenger and pilot were the only people on board the aircraft, which took off from Sandtoft Airfield 25 miles (40km) away. 'Control room cheers' Mr Murray, who works at a flying school based at the airport, said: "He made quite a good landing, actually. "He didn't know the layout of the aeroplane, he didn't have lights on so he was absolutely flying blind as well. Several injured after plane crashes into US motorway and bursts into flames
Several people have been injured after a plane smashed into a busy motorway. The light aircraft ploughed into a car on the road before bursting into flames. Footage posted on social media showed the wreckage of the plane burning in the middle of the bridge. The Cessna aircraft was heading for Key West from Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International Airport when it lost power, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. Two people aboard the plane were taken to a trauma center and three people with non-life threatening injuries were taken to a hospital. A sixth person is also believed to have been hurt but it’s unclear what condition they are in. It’s thought there was heavy traffic on the bridge at the time and the plane may have been attempting an emergency landing. At least one injured person could be seen in footage of the incident posted online. A witness who posted a video of the aftermath online said they saw three people getting out of the plane before … [Read more...] about Several injured after plane crashes into US motorway and bursts into flames

Vladimir Putin ‘is using steroids’ as his neck and head ‘fill out’, says medical expert
A leaked conversation between a Russian oligarch close to the Kremlin and a contact in the West suggests Vladimir Putin is terminally ill. In the secretly taped recording obtained by New Lines magazine, the unidentified oligarch, a close confidante of Putin, describes the Russian president as being “very ill with blood cancer”. The revelation comes after months of speculation about the tyrant’s health following the invasion of Ukraine in February. His face has become visibly puffy compared to what it was last year, which some experts say is the result of steroids being taken for a serious illness. Putin’s hardman gait has also changed radically. On Wednesday this week the 69-year-old missed an annual ice hockey match in Moscow in which he normally plays the starring role. Josephine Veasey, British mezzo-soprano who became a great favourite with audiences at Covent Garden – obituary
Josephine Veasey, who has died aged 91, was a mezzo-soprano with a rich, vibrant and well-focused voice; she emerged from the postwar chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to become one of the company’s leading soloists, making 780 appearances in some 60 parts. She was best known in works by Wagner and Berlioz, but also created the roles of Andromache, the home-centred wife and mother, in Tippett’s King Priam (1962) and the Emperor in Henze ’s We Come to the River (1976). Josephine Veasey may have stood only 5ft 1in, but she had no problem with sustaining big, dramatic parts. She realised her full potential under the conductor Georg Solti, her “musical father”, who was music director at Covent Garden in the 1960s. He encouraged her to tackle Fricka, a Wagnerian role that she had previously considered beyond her. “When we make music together, it’s always stimulating,” she said of him. The same went for Colin Davis , who succeeded Solti in 1971 and nudged her towards … [Read more...] about Josephine Veasey, British mezzo-soprano who became a great favourite with audiences at Covent Garden – obituary
Lofty Carr, brilliant navigator who had a string of adventures with the celebrated Long Range Desert Group – obituary
Mike “Lofty” Carr, who has died aged 101, was one of the top navigators in the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG); he worked with the SAS on navigation and took part in many raids in North Africa deep behind enemy lines. On the night of September 15 1942 Carr, equipped with a Vickers K machine gun, navigated a mixed force of LRDG and a detachment of the Sudan Defence Force (SDF) towards the Italian-held fort at Jalo. Jalo was a desert oasis about 250 miles south of the Mediterranean port of Benghazi on the Libyan coast. In the build-up to General Montgomery’s major offensive at El Alamein, capture of the fort would provide the SAS with a strategic base from which to launch hit-and-run raids on the enemy lines of communication. Four miles from the village, the force dismounted from their vehicles and formed three columns. Carr led them forward for more than an hour in pitch darkness. They had just skirted a minefield when they were challenged by an Italian sentry. Carr grabbed his … [Read more...] about Lofty Carr, brilliant navigator who had a string of adventures with the celebrated Long Range Desert Group – obituary
