Invasive, noxious Cuban treefrogs that eat smaller frogs and grow as big as a human fist have established a population in New Orleans, and officials say they could soon pose a threat to native frogs across the Mississippi river. The US Geological Survey says frogs caught at the Audubon zoo in the city and at a nearby riverfront park are the first established population of Cuban treefrogs on the US mainland outside Florida, where they’ve been multiplying at least since the 1950s. The captured frogs probably arrived on palm trees from Florida that were planted in the zoo in 2016, USGS research ecologist Brad Glorioso wrote in a study published in the April issue of the journal Biological Invasions. “They have noxious skin secretions, lay their eggs in bird baths and fish ponds, and they can clog plumbing and cause power outages by short-circuiting utility switches where they seek refuge,” he said in a news release. They could easily cross the river on vehicles, boats, … [Read more...] about Invasive fist-sized Cuban treefrogs discovered in New Orleans

David Fizdale, the recently fired head coach of the New York Knicks, is not a martyr, though you’d be forgiven for any confusion. Luminaries such as San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and LeBron James have eulogized Fizdale as if he were a doomed hero tossed into war by negligent leadership. On those terms, his NBA death isn’t so bad: Fizdale will cash some $17m in checks from the league’s most dysfunctional franchise over the next two seasons, a happy return for him on 18 months of forgettable work. To be clear: his bosses did suck, and the roster was wretched, but Fizdale didn’t really give the world any reason to mourn him, either. The widespread support for the canned coach comes as no surprise. Across the league, the youngish, charismatic Fizdale is about as admired as the ancient, accursed Knicks are ridiculed. Players get along with him. He seems to be a good guy. In fact, Fizdale’s talent for relationship building was a major reason he was … [Read more...] about David Fizdale was another example of the tragedy of the Knicks’ bad taste
If I told you that a 20-year experiment had improved the reading and maths abilities of the US's poorest students, would you want to replicate it here? What if I told you that the experiment was the introduction of free schools? Hold on to your seats. The most recent study from the Stanford Centre for Research on Education Outcomes (Credo) meticulously details the impact of US free schools, known as charter schools, on young people's achievement. By comparing students in each charter school with similar students attending a local traditional school, researchers measured the impact that attending each institution had. The 2013 study shows that the effect of school type is largely negligible when looking across students as a whole. But for poor students, especially poor minority ethnic students, charter schools bestowed substantial learning benefits. One might forgive free school supporters if they break into a celebratory dance on hearing this. Except, the results are not … [Read more...] about What’s the big difference between charter schools and free schools?
