The Social Democratic Party (SDE) has unveiled its 11 initial candidates for election to the European Parliament this May: Marina Kaljurand, Ivari Padar, Sven Mikser, Monika Haukanõmm, Silver Meikar, Marianne Mikko, Eiki Nestor, Katri Raik, Tanel Talve, Triin Toomesaar and Indrek Tarand. Internal elections will narrow these 11 candidates down to the permitted nine. Internal elections will determine not only the final list of nine candidates but also the order in which they will appear. As the amended European Parliament Election Act allows for each party to nominate nine candidates, two will have to be eliminated from the current list. The tool is based on a simple algorithm that asks candidates and voters to respond to certain questions or claims before producing a match between users and candidates based on their answers.Election compasses are nothing new to Finland – they’ve been around for a couple of decades already and many voters rely on them, according to Ville Seuri, Yle content manager and election web producer. Beto O'Rourke, the Texan who gained a national following with his long-shot election battle against US Senator Ted Cruz last year, will reportedly seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Mr O'Rourke, a 46-year-old former three-term US representative from West Texas, will make his announcement via video on social media at 7:30 a.m. EDT (1130 GMT) on Thursday, a source close to the campaign told Reuters on Wednesday. "I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents," Mr O'Rourke said of his hometown in a text to TV station KTSM, which first reported his entry into the race. "It's a big part of why I'm running. This city is the best example of this country at its best."
