The long-awaited trial of Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, better known as El Chapo (“Shorty”), will get under way at the US District Court in Brooklyn on 13 November. The Mexican drug baron founded the notorious Sinaloa cartel in 1989 and picked up where Colombia’s Pablo Escobar left off in dominating international narcotics trafficking, building up a vast fortune and leaving behind a bloody trail of vanquished enemies on both sides of the law. He was arrested on 8 January 2016 – on the run following the second spectacular prison break of his career – and extradited to the US before he had a chance to make fools of the Mexican authorities for a third time. “What Al Capone was to beer and whiskey during Prohibition, Guzman is to narcotics,” said Art Bilek, executive vice president of the Chicago Crime Commission. “Of the two, Guzman is by far the greater threat… And he has more power and financial … [Read more...] about Who is the Mexican drug lord El Chapo and how was he finally brought to justice?

He has lost weight in his New York jail cell, and some of his larger-than-life aura, but Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman still looms large over Mexico's Sinaloa, where he launched his narcotics empire. With his head and trademark mustache shaved, held in solitary confinement 23 hours a day when he is not in court, Guzman is a far cry from the brazen billionaire capo whose Sinaloa cartel brought this lawless western state to world fame. But even as he goes on trial Tuesday in US federal court, charged with smuggling 155 tons of cocaine into the United States, "El Chapo" remains a constant presence on the streets of Sinaloa's capital, Culiacan, where he was feared and beloved in equal measure during his days as the world's most-wanted drug lord. Street vendors still sell figurines of a gun-toting Guzman, and hats stamped with the number 701 -- the spot he once held on Forbes magazine's list of the world's richest people, with an estimated fortune of $1 billion. There is an avid fan base here … [Read more...] about Even from jail, ‘El Chapo’ looms large in Mexican home state

As a child living in poverty in Mexico, he peddled fruit just to eat. A lifetime later, as the world's most wanted drug lord, his empire was so vast he commanded a fleet of submarines to move his wares. Now, it is reckoning time for Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who will go on trial Monday in New York and faces life in prison if convicted of charges that for 25 years he flooded the United States with tons of cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine. While in prison for nearly two years Guzman, 61, has lost much of the aura of the feared and, for many in Mexico, beloved, drug kingpin he once enjoyed. He lost weight and says he has health problems. Guzman's head is shaved and he wears humble blue prison garb. His trademark moustache is gone. In the hearings he has attended in US federal court, the judge has not even allowed him to speak. "I have headaches every day. I vomit almost every day. I need work done on two molars and they hurt a lot," Guzman said in his only direct … [Read more...] about Capo no more, Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ faces the music
