The law that lets Europeans take back their data from big tech companies
Editor's Note: On Monday, January 21, Europe issued its first major fine against a U.S. tech company for violating the General Data Protection Regulation. The French data protection commission fined Google 50 million euros ($57 million) for failing to inform users how it collects data for personalized ads. France's action was a result of complaints filed at the end of May by privacy advocates, including Max Schrems and his group, "None of Your Business." Steve Kroft sat down with Schrems in November for the below story about Europe's sweeping new privacy law. This has not been a great year for big tech; on Wall Street or in Washington. For decades, companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon have made vast sums monetizing the personal information of their users with almost no oversight or regulation. They are still making vast sums of money, but public attitudes about their size and power and their ability, or willingness, to police themselves are being called into … [Read more...] about The law that lets Europeans take back their data from big tech companies

Working from home to cost £175 in energy bills this winter
The working from home revolution will cost workers hundreds of extra pounds in energy bills this winter, a prospect that could encourage thousands to get back to their desks. Britain’s large number of homeworkers are expected to feel the pinch much more than those commuting to their offices over the winter months as they use more electricity and gas per day, experts have warned. Average monthly energy bills could hit £683 in January for home workers compared to £492 for those going into work, according to price comparison site Uswitch. Even those commuting into central London could save money after Tube and bus costs are taken into account, data from Bloomberg has found, with those who walk or cycle in saving as much as £175 a week. Uswitch's energy expert Will Owen said: “Having the heating on during the colder months will be the biggest contributor to higher energy bills for those working from home. “Being at home throughout the day often also means using extra gas … [Read more...] about Working from home to cost £175 in energy bills this winter
Inflation surges into double digits for first time in 40 years
Inflation hit double digits in July as soaring food and energy costs continued to push prices up at their fastest rate in 40 years. Consumer prices rose by 10.1pc compared to a year earlier, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), outpacing market expectations of a 9.8pc increase. Grant Fitzner, chief economist at the ONS, said price rises were broad based, with a “notable” rise in food prices helping to push the rate of inflation to the highest since 1982. The figures suggest there will be no let-up for British families battling the cost of living crisis, with inflation set to peak above 13pc later this year. Another sharp increase in the energy price cap is also expected to plunge the UK into a year-long recession and spark the biggest fall in living standards since records began in 1963. The latest numbers will pile more pressure on the Bank of England to opt for another aggressive interest rate rise at its meeting next month. … [Read more...] about Inflation surges into double digits for first time in 40 years
Will These Voters Decide the Republican Primary?
GOP presidential leaders Donald Trump and Ted Cruz may have their battle decided by voters at the intersection of their competing strengths: working-class Republicans who are also evangelical Christians. Those blue-collar culturally conservative voters represent a big share of the Republican electorate not only across the south but also in many Midwestern states. They also remain one of the most closely divided constituencies in the party, according to an array of recent polls provided to Next America . Trump underscored his determination to compete for evangelical support with a high-profile speech Monday at Liberty University, which was founded by the late Jerry Falwell Senior, a leading conservative Southern Baptist pastor who also played a key role in launching the Moral Majority in the late 1970s. Cruz, who runs best among evangelicals, is pursuing these voters through traditional means: by … [Read more...] about Will These Voters Decide the Republican Primary?

Inflation news is bad – but there is a glimmer of hope
It will not feel like it, as consumers digest news that UK inflation has hit its highest level since before the Falklands War, but there are reasons to hope that inflation is coming close to its peak. That is because the price of a number of commodities - whose prices surged after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine - have fallen sharply from their recent peaks. First and foremost, take the price of oil. The price of a barrel of Brent crude peaked at $139.13 on 7 March, 11 days after Russian troops entered Ukraine , but today touched $91.51 - a level not seen since before Mr Putin initiated hostilities against his neighbour. Or have a look at copper, a commodity whose widespread use across a range of industries makes it an accurate barometer of global economic activity, earning it the nickname of 'Dr Copper' on commodity markets . The price of copper has fallen by more than 25% since it peaked at $10,674 per tonne on 4 March. This morning it was … [Read more...] about Inflation news is bad – but there is a glimmer of hope
