Animals, Emma Jane Unsworth's second novel, portrays an unconventional love triangle that from the very beginning promises to leave everyone involved heart-battered. Best friends Laura and Tyler are fellow deviants, enablers and co-dependants. When one shouts, the other comes running, whether what's promised is a night of ever more blurry nightclubs or a kicking by a drug-dealer. They live together in a ramshackle flat in Manchester and have dead-end jobs, but their dissolute lifestyle is less a case of being given a rough deal by recession Britain and more to do with being highly educated, under-stimulated and looking for oblivion. Tyler rules the roost, while Laura remonstrates and adulates in equal measure: it's a match made in hedonistic heaven. But Laura is getting married and their booze- and drug-fuelled Thelma and Louise double act is in jeopardy. While Tyler, an American from "tornado country", dishes out chaos with pistol-quick one-liners, … [Read more...] about Animals by Emma Jane Unsworth review – pills, thrills and bellyaches

AGAINST all odds, the US President and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have enjoyed a tête-à-tête at the Singapore summit. But what is the language of diplomacy for this pair - and does the North Korean leader speak the President's language? Here's what we know. Does Kim Jong-un speak English? The highly secretive tyrant isn't often expected to speak another language, so it will come as no surprise that few have heard his attempts at talking English. However, Kim's high school teacher has revealed that the dictator may know a little more English than he lets on. In an interview with NBC's Today show, Michel Riesen said Kim probably does know English - but pretends not to. Michel Riesen told Keir Simmons: "He was a good student, but he wasn't extraordinary."Riesen claims Kim attended an English-language international school in Gümligen, near Bern in Switzerland, when he was 14 years old. And he said he taught Kim sports, math, and German, and was also his … [Read more...] about Does Kim Jong-un speak English and how did he communicate with Donald Trump at the Singapore summit?
DONALD Trump became the first US President to set foot in North Korea today as he shook hands with Kim Jong-un at the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) for a historic third meeting. The North Korean leader accepted Trump's Twitter invitation to “say hello” and “shake hands” in an attempt to revive stalled nuke talks. This is Trump’s first visit to the heavily fortified border between the North and the South – as his last attempted trip in 2017 was thwarted by bad weather. Trump crossed the border and became the first US President to ever set foot in North Korea - and Kim said he was "proud" he did it. The moment was filmed and photographed as Trump approached the concrete barrier at about 3.45pm local time. Kim said it was good to see Trump again and hailed the 45th President as courageous for crossing into North KoreaTrump spoke to reporters as Kim stood beside him. He said: "I just want to say this is my honour. Stepping across that line is a great … [Read more...] about Donald Trump shakes hands with Kim Jong-un as he becomes first US president ever to set foot in North Korea
Is it disingenuous that the name of the Reddit community r/WatchPeopleDie uses the word die? Put it this way: the people in the videos and GIFs shared on Watch People Die do not merely die. Neither do they pass away (too polite), nor go to a better place (too peaceful). They are beheaded, incinerated, exploded, crushed, electrocuted, drowned, mangled, stoned and disemboweled. And their deaths, horrific and tragic as they are, can be watched by anyone with internet access, over and over again. The number of people who have watched these death videos without signing in to a Reddit account is unknowable. But the number of subscribers to Watch People Die – the number of Reddit users interested enough in seeing strangers get killed to have clicked SUBSCRIBE – exceeds 425,000. That’s nearly the population of Miami. By another way of comparison, Watch People Die is as big as the Reddit forums r/FinancialIndependence and r/Ass (NSFW, of course). So many of us would like to … [Read more...] about Exploitation on the internet? The morality of watching death online
A network of elite German combatants with links to far-right “prepper” circles secretly trained civilians in “commando-like structures”, raising fears the group planned to build up a paramilitary fighting unit. Drone footage filmed in June 2018 at a former barracks of the German armed forces in the southern town of Mosbach shows a group of around half a dozen men in military-style gear moving in formation across sandy terrain, holding what appear to be assault rifles in a firing position. Experts interviewed by the German public broadcaster ARD’s Monitor programme after viewing the footage classified the exercises as “combat training” – illegal in Germany unless carried out by active members of the military, police or private security companies and supervised by state authorities. The exercise in Mosbach, however, was organised by Uniter, a private support network for active and former soldiers and security personnel. Its founder, … [Read more...] about German group with far-right ‘prepper’ links trains civilians for combat
