Water leaks ‘DOUBLE’ during heatwave as earth drying out causes major underground pipe damage amid drought
WATER leaks have reportedly doubled in some areas during the ongoing drought as the dry earth is causing underground pipe damage. Firms say the heatwave has caused the problem which has put severe pressure on an already creaking water system. A warning from the Environment Agency also said the country’s infrastructure needs upgrading or the UK’s faces the prospect of water shortages in the next 25 years. Around three billion litres of water is lost every day to leaks in England, according to reports. The water regulator Ofwat, however, said provisional figures suggested three quarters of water companies were meeting their leakage targets. Thames Water, which supplies to 15million people in the south and south east England, confirmed to the Sunday Times it has seen a doubling in the number of leaks reported on its system since July 19 when temperatures rose above 40C. Two more counties added to hosepipe ban list
A hosepipe ban is being introduced to Cornwall and parts of Devon from Tuesday next week, South West Water has announced. ‘It’s the first time in 26 years but we’ve been left with no other choice. We need to have a hosepipe ban now to protect our precious water,’ a company spokesman said. ‘We’ve done our best to avoid this ban. We’ve increased the amount of water we can store, doubling it since the last drought in 1976. ‘We’ve opened reservoirs, installed a new borehole, and improved the way we can move water across the region to help keep everyone’s taps running.’ It means that at least eight million people are now under hosepipe bans, and when Thames Water announces its own as expected , 15million will be added to the list. South West Water’s ban covers Cornwall and a small area of northwest Devon. The company serves 1.7million customers across both counties. Is said it was now fixing about 2,000 leaks a month, with a third happening on customer supply pipes, … [Read more...] about Two more counties added to hosepipe ban list

Why fragile Britain will struggle to bounce back
Investors dialling into corporate earnings calls are increasingly liable to hear the same worrying phrases again and again: "deterioration", "slowdown" and "pull back" were increasingly common between April and June, according to analysis of more than 700 transcripts by Barclays. More often than not, executives' concerns trace back to how much consumers can afford to spend as inflation soars to 40-year highs. Fears are particularly acute in Britain, where people buying everything from Spotify subscriptions to meals out and new shoes accounts for around two thirds of UK GDP. Official data on Friday showed the economy shrank 0.1pc in the three months to June compared with the previous quarter, when GDP grew by 0.8pc. It has led to renewed fears that a squeeze on consumer spending will push the UK into recession, with inflation set to climb even higher as energy bills soar over winter. The Bank of England says consumers are already cutting back . Many are trading down to … [Read more...] about Why fragile Britain will struggle to bounce back
I’m an airline worker – my top tips for travel including why you should NEVER check in luggage or book a late flight
AN AIRLINE worker has revealed what things holidaymakers should never do if they want to avoid airport delays, including checking in bags and booking late flights. The anonymous American Airlines employee posted on Reddit to offer advice to the online community about how to avoid travel delays . Identifying themselves only as "an AA employee at the HQ", they went on to offer their top tips about what to avoid when booking a flight. The first piece of advice was to book the first flight in the morning and avoid late flights . Their reasoning was that the plane for a 6am flight is likely to have been sitting on the tarmac since the previous evening. This means that passengers don't have to rely on their plane arriving on time just hours before their departure time and reduces the impact of bad weather on the day. The poster added that "If the 6am flight is cancelled or delayed, it's possible you will be able to make it on the next flight the same day", while later … [Read more...] about I’m an airline worker – my top tips for travel including why you should NEVER check in luggage or book a late flight
