Ukrainian star backs Wimbledon’s Russia ban after Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal comments
Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk has backed Wimbledon ’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from this year's tournament. The tournament opted to prevent players from the two nations competing due to Russia ’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine . The All-England Club was criticised by many due to their decision and the tournament was stripped of ranking points by the ATP and WTA as a result. The likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal disagreed with the decision to ban players , but Kostyuk is thankful for the support shown to her country by the All-England Club. The world number 79 told the PA news agency: "All the Ukrainian players are standing with Wimbledon for their decision and I don't honestly think just Ukrainian players. I think there are a bunch of players who support this decision. I mean, we can see how players still love and everyone, no matter the circumstances, is playing. Only a couple of withdrawals - due to injuries - but everyone is still playing … [Read more...] about Ukrainian star backs Wimbledon’s Russia ban after Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal comments

GOOD TRUMP: U.S. Ends Reliance On Foreign Oil For First Time In 75 Years | The Daily Wire
For the first time in 75 years, the United States exported more oil than it imported, carrying out a pledge from President Trump that America can achieve “energy independence.” While the U.S. has been a net oil importer since 1949, over the final week of November, U.S. net imports of crude oil and petroleum products fell to minus 211,000 barrels per day (bpd) — which means America exported more than it imported, according to data from U.S. Energy Information and Administration. Oil production has been booming in the U.S. as the shale revolution swept the nation. America is now the world’s largest producer of petroleum, passing Russia and Saudi Arabia. As the U.S. oil boom spread, the power of OPEC was reduced and gas prices in the U.S. have dropped from the $4+ highs under former president Barack Obama. Net imports peaked in 2005, topping 14 million bpd, but in the last few months, the U.S. has imported an average of 2 million bpd. U.S. production has more than doubled since 2012 … [Read more...] about GOOD TRUMP: U.S. Ends Reliance On Foreign Oil For First Time In 75 Years | The Daily Wire

Everything you need to know about Help To Buy before the scheme ends
The clock is ticking on Help to Buy . Launched amid much fanfare in April 2013, the scheme originally gave both first-time buyers and home movers throughout England financial assistance by means of an equity loan from the Government of up to 20% of the price of a new-build property, capped at £600,000. All they needed was a 5% cash deposit, and the loan was interest-free for five years and didn’t have to be paid back until they sold. In 2016 London Help to Buy was introduced, doubling the size of the loan to 40% in the capital, and last year a new version of Help to Buy brought in lower regional price caps everywhere bar London, as well as restricting the scheme to first-time buyers only. Help to Buy: How the scheme works – and is it worth it? Since 2013, more than 355,000 properties, with a combined value of £99billion, have been purchased with Help to Buy equity loans. Now, nearly ten years on, the scheme is being shelved completely. Although it … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about Help To Buy before the scheme ends
Claudia Rankine Challenges White Teachers, Pities White Racists in AWP Keynote
Claudia Rankine onstage at the New Yorker Festival in 2015 Photo: Anna Webber/Getty Images The roving annual conference of MFA literary culture known as AWP (for “Association of Writers and Writing Programs”), landed yesterday in Los Angeles. In contrast with the trade-oriented BookExpo, indie-heavy AWP is known for its vibe of support, confidence building, and opportunities to dance with purple-haired poets to a DJ set by Roxane Gay . (Sample panel: “Networking for Introverts.”) But Thursday evening’s keynote speaker, Claudia Rankine , is better known for broadsides than bromides. Her stated topic was “what keeps us uncomfortable in each other’s presence” at the book fair, or, more specifically, what she sees as persistent racial tokenism in MFA workshops. Her most conciliatory note came at the end, and it was aimed not at the many hundreds of writers and teachers sitting rapt in the L.A. Convention Center’s vast auditorium, but at the millions of people currently falling … [Read more...] about Claudia Rankine Challenges White Teachers, Pities White Racists in AWP Keynote
Who is Nadhim Zahawi? Iraqi refugee to chancellor
Published 22 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Former education secretary Nadhim Zahawi has been appointed the new Chancellor of the Exchequer. It follows the resignation of Rishi Sunak who departed the government after losing confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson. For Mr Zahawi, 55, leading one of the great offices of state might have been unthinkable as a child. "I must be one of the luckiest human beings on earth," the Stratford-upon-Avon MP said reflecting on his early years. Born in Iraq in 1967 he could easily have been sent to fight in the 1980s Iran-Iraq War. "I would have been drafted in to the Iraqi army, had to go to front line and probably die," he told Nick Robinson on the Political Thinking podcast last year. Instead, he and his parents were forced to flee Iraq and he grew up in Britain. His family had been influential in … [Read more...] about Who is Nadhim Zahawi? Iraqi refugee to chancellor
