Earthquake live update
A startled Crawley resident said her house was shaking in the early hours of this morning due to an earthquake. Fabienne Salmon, who lives in Ifield, said the earthquake struck at around 1am. She said: “It lasted only three seconds and it wasn’t as strong as the last one, but there was still loud rumbling and had our house was shaking again.”The British Geological Survey, which monitors quakes around the world, confirmed the earthquake. A spokesman said site managers were currently trying to analyse how big it was. A number of earthquakes have hit the area in recent months. People living in Port Talbot have spoken of their fear of living with the threat of a major accident in the steelworks that dominate their town. At around 3.30am on Friday morning, a series of massive explosions at the Tata steelworks rocked the town. You can follow live updates on the incident here . People spoke of hearing two or three loud bangs and feeling their houses shake. And for many, it brought back memories of the 2001, when three people were killed in an explosion at the site. That explosion destroyed blast furnace number five, lifting it off its base. It was caused by leaking water building up inside the furnace. CCTV footage capturing Friday morning's blast shows the sky above the town lighting up. Tata says Friday morning's incident — in which two people received minor injuries — was caused by a "spillage of molten iron" which led to a number of fires.
