DOOMSDAY theorists are discussing claims the Earth's magnetic poles could be about to flip - with catastrophic results for civilisation and potentially even mass extinctions. Geomagnetic polar reversals happen every few hundred thousand years, with some arguing the next one is overdue. Here is our guide. What is a geomagnetic reversal? The Earth is surrounded by a magnetic force field, generated by electric currents in the molten iron that flows in the outer core of our planet. People cannot feel it but compass needles are moved by this force and swing towards magnetic north. Magnetic poles are not the same as the North and South Pole, also called the geographic poles, which are on the Earth's axis of rotation. The difference between magnetic north and true north is around 11 degrees. Over the last century or so, scientists have discovered the direction of the geomagnetic field slowly wanders around. The position of magnetic north is more than 600 miles from where it was in the early … [Read more...] about What is Earth’s magnetic field, could the magnetic poles flip and would it lead to mass extinction?
THEY sure look strange, but could octopuses be extraterrestrials? 33 Scientists think so. From editing their genes to guessing footy results, the eight-armed sea-dwellers aren't easy to pin down. But a deranged new theory claims these creatures descend from organic alien material that hitched a ride to earth on an icy comet hundreds of millions of years ago. And the 33 people touting the idea aren't tin-foil-hat-wearing loonies either. They happen to be researchers from reputable institutions who published their findings in an actual scientific journal. The alternative, they claim, is that octopuses evolved from squids after the introduction of alien DNA. According to the boffs, the "remarkable evolution of intelligent complexity" that resulted in "the emergence of the octopus" around 270 million years ago goes against what we know about Darwinian evolution - that it's a slow, gradual process. They say the genes behind this ultra-fast form of natural selection don't appear to have … [Read more...] about Are octopuses aliens? Bizarre new theory suggests the sea creatures’ eggs arrived on earth on a comet from outer space
Astronomers have detected an extremely rare laser emission from the "spectacular" Ant Nebula which suggests a double star system is hidden at its core. The rare laser blast is connected to the death of a star and was detected by the European Space Agency's Herschel space observatory. When stars the middleweight size of our sun get to the end of their lives they shrink into dense white dwarfs, ejecting off their outer layers of gas and dust and creating a nebula.Last week, research revealed that our sun would create a planetary nebula when it dies in 10 billion years, leaving behind a ghostly ring like that of Abell 39.The Ant Nebula is one such cloud made of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionised gases and the laser emission suggests that its striking appearance - which has earned it its name - is hiding an even more dramatic demise for its original star.:: This is how the sun will die - and it's not looking good for EarthIn space, lasers are quite different from how they appear on … [Read more...] about ‘Space ant’ fired laser at Earth, say astronomers
AN ASTEROID bigger than the size of a football field will pass Earth tomorrow at less than half the distance of the Moon. The space rock, which is estimated to be up to 427ft wide – - is named 2010 WC9 and is expected to pass us on Tuesday at 23:05 BST. It will skim past us at a distance of just 26,419 miles, astronomers say. The Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona first detected the space rock almost eight years ago on 30 November 2010. The astronomers watched it until 10 December, when it became too faint to see. But they didn’t have enough observations to track its orbit fully and to predict its return. However, last week astronomers discovered an asteroid and temporarily named it ZJ99C60, until they realised it was merely the return of asteroid 2010 WC9, hence the name. According to some orbit calculations made by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the near-miss tomorrow will be the closest of the 2010 WC9 asteroid in nearly 300 years. Unfortunately for … [Read more...] about Asteroid size of a football field will miss hitting Earth by just 26,000 miles tomorrow
The jihadist manual behind the brutality that underpinned Islamic State has been revealed for the first time in new analysis of a 579-page text, written by the Isis ideologue Abu Abdullah al-Muhajir. The text attempts to legitimise the barbarous acts of the jihadist group, including the mutilation of corpses, the trade in human organs, beheading, the killing of children along with “scorched earth operations” and global terrorist attacks. After two years examining and transcribing the document, experts at the counter-extremist group Quilliam have completed a meticulous appraisal of the extremists’ core textbook along with a robust theological rebuttal of its “twisted” interpretation of Islamic teachings. Used by Isis and its supporters to validate a large range of horrific acts, the “bible for jihadists” provided the theoretical and legal framework for the violent terrorist group. “There is a startling lack of study and concern regarding … [Read more...] about The core Isis manual that twisted Islam to legitimise barbarity
