AN ASTEROID bigger than a football field will shoot passed Earth tomorrow at less than half the distance of the Moon. The rock named 2010 WC9 and is expected to pass us late at night. Here's what we know about the space stone. When will Asteroid 2010 WC9 pass Earth? Asteroid 2010 WC9 is expected to pass us on Tuesday at 23:05 BST. The Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona first detected the space rock almost eight years ago on 30 November 2010. The astronomers watched it until 10 December, when it became too faint to see. But they didn’t have enough observations to track its orbit fully and to predict its return. However, last week astronomers discovered an asteroid and temporarily named it ZJ99C60, until they realised it was merely the return of asteroid 2010 WC9, hence the name. How close will it get It will skim past us at a distance of just 26,419 miles, astronomers say. Comparatively, 2010 WC9 is not considered a “large” asteroid by any means, but a space rock of this … [Read more...] about When will Asteroid 2010 WC9 pass Earth, how close will it get and will I be able to see it in the UK?
A fragment from the early days of our solar system has been discovered four billion kilometres from Earth. The first of its kind to be found so far away, 2004 EW95 is a carbon-rich asteroid that currently resides in the Kuiper Belt, a cold region beyond the orbit of Neptune. Astronomers suspect the 300km-long object was formed in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter before being ejected into the outer reaches of the solar system. While performing routine observations using the Hubble Space Telescope, Queen's University Belfast astronomer Dr Wesley Fraser noticed something unusual about one of the distant asteroids he was monitoring. Read more Nasa's plan to deflect deadly asteroid would not keep world safe Its “reflectance spectrum” – the pattern of light reflecting from it – marked it out from neighbouring bodies. "The reflectance spectrum of 2004 EW95 was clearly distinct from the other observed outer solar system objects," said Dr Tom Seccull, … [Read more...] about Mysterious ‘exiled’ asteroid found in far reaches of solar system
Hundreds of cosmic objects swarming unnervingly close to Earth come to life in an intimidating new NASA visualization, based on the latest data from its asteroid-hunting mission. NEOWISE has charted almost 30,000 objects since it resumed its work in 2013, including 788 near-Earth objects and 136 comets. Ten of the objects discovered by NEOWISE in the past year alone have been classified as potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs). READ MORE: Football field-sized asteroid zooms dangerously close to Earth NASA’s latest animation is based on detections made by the telescope over its last four years of surveying the solar system. The green dots represent near-Earth asteroids while the yellow dots stand for comets. A ‘near-Earth object’ is defined as an asteroid or comet whose orbit intersects with the Earth's and therefore may pose a threat. They can range in length from meters to tens of kilometers. Near-Earth objects are classified as potentially hazardous … [Read more...] about Threat assessment: NASA’s asteroid hunter reveals scariest, Earth-bound objects (VIDEO)
NASA confirmed the space rock – dubbed 2016 JP – is expected to zoom past our planet on Friday at around 10.36pm UTC. It will be travelling at a speed close to five miles per second and will pass at a distance of about two million miles away, according to Daily Star. That’s considered incredibly close in space terms. According to the US space agency, the rock has an estimated diameter between 110 and 360 meters – making it bigger than the iconic Paris monument, which stands at 324m. It also makes it double the size of the meteor that almost wiped out Chelyabinsk in Russia almost five years ago. The asteroid – which orbits the sun every 362 days – has been classed by NASA as “potentially hazardous” because of the sheer proximity from Earth. But thankfully, experts predict there is no threat of it hitting our planet. The rock was discovered by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) near Tucson, Arizona. The passing comes just days after … [Read more...] about News.Az — Your Window to the RegionNASA warns colossal asteroid BIGGER than Eiffel Tower heading to Earth THIS WEEK
Much of what's in Earth's neighborhood is unknown; for example, scientists are currently grappling with the question of how to track all of the estimated 25,000 big asteroids whipping around our solar system and posing a potential threat to humanity. Asteroids, it should be remembered, are basically small planets orbiting the sun, and range in size from hundreds of miles to just a few feet long. About 17,000 large, near-Earth asteroids remain undetected by scientists. Asteroids that small can still be devastating. One such meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, smashing thousands of windows and injuring 1,200 people. That one was only 62 feet wide. — AeroSpaceGuide (@AeroSpaceGuide) April 9, 2018 But it's the big ones that pose the most potential for mass destruction, and there's an estimated 25,000 of them. One 1,500-foot-wide asteroid named Bennu, the most dangerous … [Read more...] about NASA Scrambles to Track, Block Thousands of Potentially Deadly Asteroids
