NASA scientists have discovered ten "Earth-like" planets that could be capable of hosting alien life.Boffins working with the ultra-powerful Kepler space telescope tracked the mysterious rocky planets that sit in the "habitual zone" of their stars. It means that, like Earth, the planets are in the sweet spot in terms of distance from their suns, allowing life-giving liquid water to pool on the surface.Mario Perez, Kepler program scientist at Nasa, hailed the new data as the first evidence of these "near Earth-analogs – planets with roughly the same size and orbit as Earth".The Kepler space telescope has been hunting for planets since it was launched into orbit around the Sun in 2009.It can spot tiny drops in a distant star’s brightness when a planet crosses in front of it, called a transit. The latest groundbreaking discoveries were among 2,335 planets beyond our solar system that have been verifyied after being found by Kepler.Of these, only 30 planets have been found … [Read more...] about Nasa finds group of ‘Earth-like’ planets that could host alien life using Kepler space telescope orbiting around the sun
Earth 2 planet
HEARTBREAKING scenes have featured elephants starving to death on this famous BBC wildlife series, and others captured lions chasing down gazelles. But Planet Earth 2 producers have revealed that airing the death of penguins would be too much for viewers.A source close to the natural history programme said the little creatures closely resemble "little people" and it draws the line at showing their dying moments. The world's biggest colony of penguins on Zavodovski Island, near Antarctica, featured during the first of six episodes on Sunday. And filmmakers revealed they faced distressing scenes with dozens of the adorable birds severely injured. In the behind-the-scenes section at the end of the episode, Liz White said: "It was absolute carnage."It was quite heart-breaking, they are trying so hard to get up the beach with broken legs and bleeding, it’s very sobering really."The beach in the afternoon was just a scene of death and destruction."An insider told Mail Online that the … [Read more...] about BBC’s Planet Earth 2 won’t show dying penguins fearing it would be too upsetting for viewers
The Kepler Space Observatory has revealed that there may be more than two billion planets in our galaxy capable of supporting life.Astronomers used the telescope to discover that 22 percent of Sun-like stars may be orbited by planets which resemble our own.An Earth-like planet is one that is small enough to be rocky, rather than being a gas giant like Jupiter or Saturn, and orbits its star within the “habitable zone”.This zone is the distance from a star at which the temperature is not too hot or too cold but just right for liquid water to exist, it is also known as the “Goldilocks zone”.The presence of liquid water is the main criteria for whether a planet is suitable for life and Earth depends on its unique and complex properties favourable to biochemistry. The fact that such a high proportion of Sun-like stars are likely to have Earth-like planets orbiting them increase the chances that we might eventually find other life somewhere in our … [Read more...] about After Proxima b second Earth discovery, how many other Earth-like planets have been found?
PLANET Earth II viewers were stunned tonight as a jaguar took on a gigantic caiman crocodile - and won.Last week fans of the BBC nature show watched in horror as a majestic snow leopard 'raped' a helpless female. This week big cats took centre stage again, with a 21 stone male jaguar attacking a giant caiman croc as it glided near the edge of the river. As it dragged the open-mouthed reptile out of the water, narrator Sir David Attenborough explained the feline knows the "most vulnerable point" of the crocodile - the back of its skull. While impressed by the cats hunting prowess, viewers recoiled in disgust as a loud 'crack' could be heard as the jaguar sank its teeth into the bone.Several took to Twitter to express their admiration - and revulsion.Elsewhere in the episode, a Wilsons Bird of Paradise showed off its iridescent emerald green plume in an attempt to woo its mate. The elaborate display by the colourful creature, described by Attenborough as "the brightest … [Read more...] about Planet Earth 2 viewers stunned as jaguar takes on giant caiman croc – and wins
Speaking at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Washington on Thursday, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate John Grunsfeld said the discovery of the exoplanet "is a pretty close cousin of Earth." "This exciting result brings us one step closer to finding an Earth 2.0," Grunsfeld said. 'Habitable zone' Jon Jenkins, Kepler data analysis head at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field in California said the earth-like planet is 1.5 times the size the Earth but its 385-day orbit is only 5 percent longer. It's mass and composition are yet to be determined, but previous research suggests that planets the size of Kepler-452b likely to be rocky. "It's spent billions of years in the habitable zone of its star - that means it could well host life on its surface, or could have at some point in its history," Jenkins said. The planet's parent star Kepler-452 has the same temperature as our own but is 20 percent brighter and has a diameter 10 percent … [Read more...] about Nasa’s Kepler mission discovers Earth’s ‘older and bigger cousin’
