UK weather: Sunny weekend continues but freezing temperatures to return next week
Brits will once again be tempted to head outdoors today on another bright and sunny day. Crowds flocked to beaches and parks on Saturday as most of Britain baked in spring-like sunshine. This is despite the country being in a national lockdown, with scientists warning on Friday that people must not "wreck it" now after the government published a "roadmap" out of the crisis last week. There will be more mild and sunny weather today, although it will be windier in the south, with some cool conditions expected on coasts. And by the middle of next week, temperatures are set to drop to as low as freezing again, with the mercury dropping to just 1C in Manchester on Wednesday, according to the BBC. The Met Office said the weather next week should remain dry and bright, although they refuse to rule out colder spells going forward. Its forecast reads: "Confidence is high for this period as local high pressure is expected to give a mostly settled outlook, with any uncertainty … [Read more...] about UK weather: Sunny weekend continues but freezing temperatures to return next week
Uighur exiles living in fear in Turkey
"I lost touch with my family five years ago; I only learned of my father's death one year later," a teary-eyed Abdüsükür tells DW. The 32-year-old is based in Istanbul's Zeytinburnu neighborhood, where most of the city's Uighur immigrants live and work. He earns a living working in a secondhand shop for mobile phones. Abdüsükür is one of approximately 50,000 Uighurs who have recently fled China seeking safety in Turkey . The Chinese government has been persecuting the ethnic minority, with witnesses reporting that Uighurs have been detained in inhumane conditions in reeducation camps. Many of them, including minors, are picked up and deported without warning. Abdüsükür fled China's northwestern Xinjiang province five years ago. "We were constantly persecuted in East Turkestan [Xinjiang province]," he tells DW. "Many people were jailed, or taken to reeducation camps, just for praying." Budget 2021: ‘Amazon tax’ plans delayed to Autumn despite Brits facing stealth rise in weeks
A new tax on internet giants’ sales is not expected until the Autumn, if at all - despite Brits facing stealth hikes in this week’s Budget. Wednesday’s statement is tipped to freeze income tax thresholds for three years, removing a planned tax break from April for all Brits who earn over £12,500. But it’s understood an ‘online sales tax’, which could hit giants like Amazon whose profits soared in the pandemic, will not be announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his Budget. Instead the idea is part of a wider review of business rates, which has been delayed due to coronavirus . While an interim report on that review will be published on March 23, a senior government source said there will be no final action on any online sales tax until the Autumn. Even then, there is no guarantee an online sales tax will definitely be introduced. A Treasury call for evidence last year warned it could simply lead to costs being passed on to customers or “distort” sales. Chancellor Rishi … [Read more...] about Budget 2021: ‘Amazon tax’ plans delayed to Autumn despite Brits facing stealth rise in weeks
Charlie Sheen’s ‘regret’ over turning down rehab offer that could have saved his career
Ten years on from his very public meltdown, Charlie Sheen has shared his regret about turning down a rehab trip he now feels would have saved his career. The actor was reflecting on his 2011 firing from his hugely popular CBS sitcom Two And A Half Men following a series of tumultuous events in his personal life, including his guilty plea to a charge of domestic violence. Sheen was the highest paid actor on TV at the time, earning £1.3million an episode. In a new interview he recalled one particular moment when he now feels his career could have been saved. He said top telly executives arrived at his home with an offer for him to fly via private jet immediately to rehab. Sheen told Yahoo !: "There's a moment when [former CBS CEO] Les Moonves and his top lawyer, Bruce, were at my house and they said, 'OK, the Warner jet is fuelled up on the runway. Wheels up in an hour and going to rehab, right?'" He didn't take the offer, saying all he could think about was being offered … [Read more...] about Charlie Sheen’s ‘regret’ over turning down rehab offer that could have saved his career
