Scientists have concluded that the Great Barrier Reef can no longer be saved because it is so damaged. The plight of the reef is partly due to the “extraordinary rapidity” of climate change, according to experts. The reef has been severely damaged by the warming of the oceans, and around 95 per cent of it suffers from bleaching, according to scientists who surveyed it in 2016. Experts have said the ecological function of the reef should be maintained as much as possible in coming years, but that the reef itself will not be saved in its current form. A committee of experts set up by the Australian government said the lesser target of "protecting the ecological function" of the reef is more realistic than salvaging it. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority explained what this would mean: "The concept of ‘maintaining ecological function’ refers to the balance of ecological processes necessary for the reef ecosystem as a whole to persist, but perhaps in a different … [Read more...] about Great Barrier Reef is damaged beyond repair and can no longer be saved, say scientists

Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing
With housing constantly in the news these days it’s worth considering New Zealand’s responses to housing issues in the past. Foremost in government approaches to housing those in need was the First Labour Government’s introduction of their radical state housing programme following the 1935 election. In towns all over New Zealand the Government purchased blocks of land for new residential estates with the houses to be rented to those in need. Palmerston North was included. It was reported in the Manawatū Standard on November 27, 1936 that “Sixty acres of land, an educational reserve …. have been acquired for the purpose, and there will be no delay in putting the scheme into effect, stated Mr J. Hodgens, M.P…. The block will be subdivided according to the latest town-planning principles, and will not have the rectangular severity of older streets. Corners will be rounded and breathing spaces provided, possibly with a central square or reserve.” READ MORE: Couple reflect … [Read more...] about Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing

Anneli Drummond-Hay, horsewoman who reigned supreme in both eventing and show jumping – obituary
Anneli Drummond-Hay, who has died aged 84, was the foremost female rider of her era; invincible in eventing on the great Merely-A-Monarch, she landed the world’s two premier three-day events, Badminton and Burghley, in the early 1960s. She then switched to showjumping, scoring dozens of grand prix wins, a women’s European Championship, the Hickstead Derby and two Rome Derbies. Many riders enjoy a spell of supremacy in one discipline, but being equally adept at two equestrian sports put her in a class of her own. From the outside Anneli Drummond-Hay’s life seemed dripping with glamour. Steeped in Scottish aristocracy, she appeared to glide from debutantes’ balls to the world of international show jumping, in a golden age for the sport when it was a mainstay on primetime television. But her true story was grittier. She weathered an awkward and penniless childhood, going against the grain to become a professional rider when “it was not the done thing for a lady of my … [Read more...] about Anneli Drummond-Hay, horsewoman who reigned supreme in both eventing and show jumping – obituary
