F1 bosses will be “happy” to see “direct” Sebastian Vettel retire, says Ralf Schumacher
Some Formula 1 chiefs will be "happy" to see the back of retiring driver Sebastian Vettel , according to Ralf Schumacher . This season will be the German's last as an F1 driver, as the four-time world champion announced on Thursday . The revelation left fans gutted and led to a swathe of tributes from his fellow drivers as they reacted to the news.. But former racer Schumacher believes there will be some who are not so sad to see the back of the four-time world champion. Speaking to German media, the six-time race winner claimed F1 boss Stefano Domenicali will be one of those happy to see the back of an influential driver not afraid to speak his mind. "Internally in Formula 1 some are now happy he's gone, especially Domenicali and co, because he addressed all the problems directly so in part was very uncomfortable, but rightly so," he said, as quoted by Motorsport-total.com . Schumacher went on to say that he would be sad to see Vettel go, but added that he was … [Read more...] about F1 bosses will be “happy” to see “direct” Sebastian Vettel retire, says Ralf Schumacher
THE £60 MILLION BRAND THAT TOOK (CACAO) BALLS TO BUILD! Ella Mills opens up about family, fame and facing down her haters
When Ella Mills, 31, says that her life is ‘on fast-forward’ it’s hard to disagree. Just ten years ago, as a student, she started the blog Deliciously Ella, detailing her recovery from debilitating illness through meditation and plant-based recipes. Today, Deliciously Ella is a multifaceted lifestyle brand with projected revenues for 2022 of £20 million (putting the company’s value at around £60 million) and over two million Instagram followers. In 2012, plant-based eating was a niche concern. ‘But now 50 per cent of the UK population are into it,’ she says. Clearly there is a lot of money to be made from cacao nibs. Ella and her family (husband and Deliciously Ella’s CEO Matthew Mills, 38, and their daughters Skye, three, and May, nearly two) live just off London ’s Kensington Church Street, where houses sell for north of £5 million, but Ella insists their lifestyle is not lavish. She can’t drive and her husband Matthew’s car is a secondhand BMW. Their last holiday was four days … [Read more...] about THE £60 MILLION BRAND THAT TOOK (CACAO) BALLS TO BUILD! More info New analysis from the Labour Party of figures from the Bank of England has revealed a pension worth £6,930 thirteen years ago will only see a very marginal increase to £6,934 by next March. Based on prices in 2022, that is down by £462 on April this year as soaring inflation - which recently surged to 9.4 percent - eats away at retirement income. Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Jonathan Ashworth said: "Having promised at the general election to help pensioners with the cost of living, the Conservatives then broke the triple lock. Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing
With housing constantly in the news these days it’s worth considering New Zealand’s responses to housing issues in the past. Foremost in government approaches to housing those in need was the First Labour Government’s introduction of their radical state housing programme following the 1935 election. In towns all over New Zealand the Government purchased blocks of land for new residential estates with the houses to be rented to those in need. Palmerston North was included. It was reported in the Manawatū Standard on November 27, 1936 that “Sixty acres of land, an educational reserve …. have been acquired for the purpose, and there will be no delay in putting the scheme into effect, stated Mr J. Hodgens, M.P…. The block will be subdivided according to the latest town-planning principles, and will not have the rectangular severity of older streets. Corners will be rounded and breathing spaces provided, possibly with a central square or reserve.” READ MORE: Couple reflect … [Read more...] about Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing

Letters: The stupendous cost to the Treasury of generous public-sector pensions
SIR – Eve Wilson ( Letters, June 26 ), a retired headteacher, generously makes the point that she does not need the very large pension increase which will be awarded to most if not all public-service pensioners on the occasion of the next review. I don’t begrudge her the windfall – it is only seeking to keep pace with inflation. The comparisons with less protected retirees, however, is alarming. I am fortunate to be in receipt of a final-salary pension but, at best, I can expect one half of it to cover inflation up to a maximum of 5 per cent; the other half receives no increases at all, my employer having been unable to meet the cost of continuing a discretionary increase of up to 3 per cent per annum on pre-1997 service. I served for 20 years as a trustee of my employer’s pension scheme and know only too well the staggering cost of purchasing annuities to fund even minimum annual increments. It appears that public-service pensions have no upper incremental limits, something … [Read more...] about Letters: The stupendous cost to the Treasury of generous public-sector pensions
Theresa May Mark II could well be the most successful period of her premiership
A deal with the Democratic Unionist Party will mean Theresa May has a stay of execution at Number 10. Can we expect her to perform any better than she has done in her first 11 months, which is already being compared to Anthony Eden’s disastrous leadership from 1955-1957 which crashed in flames after his mishandling of the Suez crisis? Prime Ministers usually come to power ill-prepared for what lies ahead and without the willingness to learn. Theresa May was no exception. She appointed two tenacious Chiefs of Staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill , who had worked alongside her with ferocious loyalty at the Home Office. She thought that she could employ the same style in the vastly different world of Number 10. But the job of Prime Minister is one of persuasion, not command and control. Timothy and Hill crafted a meritocratic agenda for her which had much sense: but it never gained traction across Whitehall. Both individuals have become scapegoats for the election defeat and … [Read more...] about Theresa May Mark II could well be the most successful period of her premiership
Arcadia trustees close in on £1bn Topshop pension deal
Arcadia Group's pension schemes are closing in on a deal to offload retirement funding promises made by the retail empire, owned by Sir Philip Green, prior to its collapse two years ago. Sky News has learnt that the trustees of its executive and staff schemes are in detailed discussions with Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC), the insurance company, about a transaction to insure roughly £1bn of liabilities. The discussions are not thought to be exclusive with PIC, and other so-called pension risk transfer specialists are also said to have been engaged in talks in recent weeks. If a deal is successfully concluded with PIC or another insurer, it would draw a line under one of the most notorious pension rows in British corporate history. Sir Philip agreed a £385m funding package with The Pensions Regulator in 2019 to plug the gap in Arcadia's pension schemes, whose members include thousands of high street workers at chains including Topshop and Dorothy Perkins. … [Read more...] about Arcadia trustees close in on £1bn Topshop pension deal
History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Climate change was born as a modern political issue in the United States Senate. On a hot June day in 1988, a senior NASA scientist warned a Senate committee that global warming, which was previously mooted only as a hypothesis, was not only real but was already underway. “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here,” James Hansen said. An auspicious start, and an ironic one. Since then, the fight against climate change in the United States and abroad has been defined by one constant: You can’t get the Senate to do anything. For 34 years, the upper chamber’s peculiar failure to act on the issue has shaped nearly every facet of policy and politics. Because the Senate could not pass a comprehensive climate bill, Congress could not; because Congress could not pass a climate bill, climate-concerned presidents had to rely on executive action and the permissiveness of the Supreme Court, and climate activists had to … [Read more...] about History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
