Sir David Attenborough has said the BBC of today would never have commissioned his first nature show - depriving him of a career spanning eight decades. The legendary broadcaster, 94, said the risk-averse and red tape-loving corporation wouldn't have taken a chance on his groundbreaking 1954 programme Zoo Quest, which followed him on an expedition to Africa. Sir David said: “Out of the blue I thought it would be wonderful to go to Africa. "To my amazement the bosses at the BBC said, ‘That’s not a bad idea’... and they let me do it. I’m sure I could have done it much better if I’d been more experienced or talented, but we got away with it." He added to the Call Of The Wild with Cel Spellman and WWF podcast: "The BBC said, ‘How long will it take?’ ‘Ooh, three or four months’. ‘Oh well, good luck, my dear chap. Hope to see you at Christmas’. "It was that kind of organisation at the time, it isn’t like that anymore." Neglected North where ‘even McDonald’s has left’ demands PM delivers on promises
As the coronavirus vaccine rollout continues, with 16 million already jabbed, the country can finally begin to see a way out of the pandemic which put normal life on hold for a year. Rightly, the Government has focused all its efforts on tackling the crisis and saving lives. But when the country emerges from lockdown and the crisis begins to ebb, thoughts will turn to how Tory election promises made in December 2019 – just weeks before Britain's first confirmed Covid-19 case was discovered – can be delivered. Here, Deputy Political Editor Ben Glaze examines the scale of the challenge. Boris Johnson is today urged to deliver on “levelling-up” promises to Northern voters as the country begins to look beyond the coronavirus pandemic. The Prime Minister was warned he owes a debt to Red Wall voters in former Labour heartlands who were seduced by his election pledges on tackling Britain's inequality. Pakistan: Senate election deals a blow to Imran Khan
Pakistani Premier Imran Khan will seek a vote of confidence in the National Assembly (lower house of parliament) following a major setback in the upper house elections on Wednesday. The move is aimed at restoring confidence in Khan's leadership after his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party failed to win a majority in the 100-member Senate, despite having a numerical advantage in the lower house. Members of the National Assembly in the capital Islamabad and four provincial assemblies vote for the Senate members. Upper house lawmakers are elected for six years, however, all of them are not elected at the same time. On Wednesday, elections were held for 37 Senate seats. After the vote, opposition parties – mainly former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) and former president Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) – now enjoy the support of 53 members, and the ruling alliance of 47 members. Ruling parties generally secure a majority in the Senate. … [Read more...] about Pakistan: Senate election deals a blow to Imran Khan
Northern Ireland loyalists pull support for Good Friday peace deal
Loyalist paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland were on Thursday reported to have told London they are temporarily withdrawing support for the 1998 peace agreement, often called the Good Friday Agreement. The decision was taken amid concerns over the UK's Brexit deal with the European Union, Northern Irish newspaper the Belfast Telegraph reported . A letter from an umbrella body representing loyalist groups said its opposition was because of the Northern Irish Protocol — part of the Brexit divorce deal. They oppose the additional checks and paperwork for goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland — implemented to prevent the need for a hard border on the island of Ireland. What did the letter say? The communication — sent to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson — said the opposition should remain "peaceful and democratic." However, it will raise fears about the future of the loyalist ceasefire. The letter, from the Loyalist Communities Council, claimed … [Read more...] about Northern Ireland loyalists pull support for Good Friday peace deal
