South Pacific Pictures Shortland Street's original cast member looks back at what the show has meant to him and audiences. Like all good soap stars, Rebekah Randell expected plenty of drama when she joined Shortland Street – and she’s certainly had her share as the tragically widowed Nurse Dawn Karim. What she didn’t expect was to be vomited on, repeatedly “I seem to be the vomit girl,” she says, laughing. Randell and co-star Scott Smart, who plays dishy doctor Marty Walker, frequently end up being fall guys for the writers. Stuff your dad should tell you: The difference between good debt and bad debt
STUFF David Boyle discussing good and bad debt. David Boyle is head of sales and marketing at Mint Asset Management Limited. OPINION: Ask your dad if he remembers The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I do, my dad took me to see it at the Warburton picture theatre in the late 70s. It was epic, larger than life and I can still hear the soundtrack to this day whenever I think of the movie or Clint Eastwood. Quentin Tarantino said it was his favourite movie of all time. So, what’s that got to do with debt you might ask? Well, I might be stretching my luck with the ‘ugly’ reference but there’s lots to say about the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’. Believe it or not, Kiwis have only really been able to access what I call everyday debt since the 1980s. Before that, other than property or business loans, it was almost impossible to borrow from a bank. DR ELLIE CANNON: How bad will these tremors get if there really is no cure?
I have suffered something called essential tremor since childhood. I’m now 77, and five years ago it began to get severe. The tremor affects my whole body and I hate going out as I feel people are staring or laughing at me. I asked my GP if I could see a neurologist but the hospital refused, saying there was no cure. They suggested a website I could read instead. I want to know what to expect in the future, so I can be prepared. I feel so alone. Tremor can be a disabling, distressing and embarrassing condition to live with. It is also one of the most common neurological problems, often starting in childhood. With any condition that has been lifelong, if there has been a worsening I would say this warrants a further assessment. Other causes of tremor could be Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and side effects of medications. Tremor can be a disabling, distressing and embarrassing condition to live with. It is also one of the most common neurological problems, often … [Read more...] about DR ELLIE CANNON: How bad will these tremors get if there really is no cure?
The Frenetic Basketball Nostalgia of Winning Time
The 1980s Los Angeles Lakers were one of the most dominant teams in sports. At a time when professional basketball was on its heels, the Lakers brought new excitement: Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird, Jerry Buss and the glitzy Forum Club, and an up-tempo flow offense. That’s the story of HBO’s big-budget series Winning Time , whose Season 1 finale aired on Sunday, May 8. David Sims, Vann R. Newkirk II, and Ross Andersen—three of The Atlantic ’s biggest basketball fans—get together to discuss the series. What do they make of the accusations from former players that the show is inaccurately over-the-top? Does the producer Adam McKay’s style energize and streamline the show—or just add distraction on top of the glut of story lines? And how do you dramatize a history with a well-known outcome? Listen to their discussion here: The Review : Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Pocket Casts The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity. It contains … [Read more...] about The Frenetic Basketball Nostalgia of Winning Time
‘Love’ in a time of ugly abuse
Rosemary McLeod is an award-winning journalist and author. She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year honours list for service to journalism and television. OPINION: The high-speed crash called the brief marriage of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, its aftermath now on live TV, mirrors Russia’s ongoing wrecking of Ukraine, seen too on news bulletins. How like our own lives, we don’t say, as we point to the couple’s misery, the catastrophe of war being too vast to comprehend, the battles of one man versus one woman all too familiar. A vile war – as all wars are – plays second fiddle just now to watching people who didn’t know how to live even when they had it all. And millions target the once beautiful actress as spitefully as anyone can who hides their real name and was never themselves talented or lovely to look at. Watch and learn. If you haven’t had an alcoholic or drug addict in your life so far, time will find you one, and that’s a … [Read more...] about ‘Love’ in a time of ugly abuse
