Brits have been urged not to take part in a growing civil disobedience campaign over the rise of energy bills. Tens of thousands of people have already cancelled their gas and electricity direct debit payments from October 1 as part of the Don’t Pay movement . Run by anonymous activists, the grassroots campaign is calling for households to boycott their bills in response to the energy crisis, which is driving millions into poverty. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Ofgem’s CEO Jonathan Brearley warned this could hike up costs for everyone. ‘I know everyone is extremely worried about paying their energy bill,’ he said. ‘But absolutely I would not encourage anyone to join a campaign like this for two reasons. ‘First of all, it will drive up costs for everyone across the board. And secondly, if you are facing difficulty in paying your bill, the best thing you can do is get in touch with your energy company.’ He added: ‘I would not encourage anyone … [Read more...] about Ofgem begs customers not to boycott paying their gas bills

Prince Andrew did not pay his accuser Virginia Giuffre £12m settlement: report
Queen Elizabeth's second son Prince Andrew has paid his accuser Virginia Giuffre as little as £3million, despite reports of him agreeing a £12million settlement, according to new report. The Duke of York's lawyers have negotiated a cut-price deal of £3million-to-£5million, The Sun, citing sources, reported on Monday. "It was thought, and widely reported, that Virginia got a settlement of £12million from Andrew, but that’s not right. It was far less than that, as low as £3million. No doubt this will have influenced the conditions of the agreement that she was prepared to sign," A source claimed. This could go some way to explaining why Giuffre was not forced to sign a gagging order, leaving her free to write a bombshell memoir in the years to come. This comes just days after It comes after it revealed that Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have bought a swanky £5million house in London — despite moaning about being hard-up. … [Read more...] about Prince Andrew did not pay his accuser Virginia Giuffre £12m settlement: report

London’s desalination plant won’t be fired up even if official drought is declared
It was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2010 and promised to be the saviour for thousands of Londoners in case of drought . Twelve years later, its moment arrived during the driest July on record – but the desalination plant in Beckton, east London, was effectively mothballed with no clear date for its resurrection. Thames Water has long touted the plant as one of its key measures to protect Londoners in case of drought , and it has been included in local authorities’ resilience plans. But should an official drought be declared this year, the plant will not be fired up as it undergoes what the water company said was “necessary planned work”. There are now questions over whether it has ever been fully operational since it was built. The water industry is already under pressure over its record on leaks , which amount to 2.4 billion litres a year, even as customers are asked to cut down to help the environment. It now faces more criticism that it is asking households to … [Read more...] about London’s desalination plant won’t be fired up even if official drought is declared
Calls for emergency increase to Universal Credit as report finds some families £1,600 worse off
The next prime minister is facing calls to immediately increase Universal Credit payments to stop vulnerable people spiralling further into poverty when fuel bills increase again this winter. The poorest in society are suffering three major blows to their income in the year to October 2022, according to a report commissioned by former prime minister Gordon Brown. As well as losing the £20-a-week uplift to Universal Credit, benefits are failing to keep up with inflation - and a jump in the energy price cap is expected this autumn. It means some families are up to £1,600-a-year worse off because of the cost of living crisis - even after government help is taken into account. Poverty expert Professor Donald Hirsch, who wrote the report, says the package of measures offered by the government falls far short of what low income households need - and urgent action is required. Cost of living: People fear ‘awful winter’ as bills continue to rise
If people are struggling to pay their bills now - during a hot summer - how much worse will it be in the winter when homes need to be heated? From the stories Sky News viewers have been telling, it is clear that as soon as temperatures begin to drop, the cost of living crisis will worsen significantly. Julie Martinez, 43, emailed to say she works as a health care assistant on a psychiatric ward doing 13-hour shifts and is getting into debt on her credit card because she uses it to pay for petrol to get to work. "I have no money left over at the end of the month and I am struggling to feed myself," she said. "I feed my dog before I feed me. I have no money to take my daughter out during the school holidays. "I feel at breaking point. Something has to give or people are going to end up homeless." Viewer Richard said he and his partner are left with "£3 for three weeks to live on". Glenn said he and his family are reducing the amount of food they buy, not travelling to … [Read more...] about Cost of living: People fear ‘awful winter’ as bills continue to rise
History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Climate change was born as a modern political issue in the United States Senate. On a hot June day in 1988, a senior NASA scientist warned a Senate committee that global warming, which was previously mooted only as a hypothesis, was not only real but was already underway. “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here,” James Hansen said. An auspicious start, and an ironic one. Since then, the fight against climate change in the United States and abroad has been defined by one constant: You can’t get the Senate to do anything. For 34 years, the upper chamber’s peculiar failure to act on the issue has shaped nearly every facet of policy and politics. Because the Senate could not pass a comprehensive climate bill, Congress could not; because Congress could not pass a climate bill, climate-concerned presidents had to rely on executive action and the permissiveness of the Supreme Court, and climate activists had to … [Read more...] about History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden
Washington — The Senate on Sunday passed Democrats' sweeping economic package designed to combat climate change, address health care costs and raise taxes on large corporations, marking a crucial achievement for President Biden and his party as they look to maintain their hold on Congress in the November midterm elections. The plan, called the Inflation Reduction Act, cleared the upper chamber by a vote of 51 to 50 along party lines, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided Senate. Democrats used a fast-track legislative process known as reconciliation to pass the measure in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans. "It's been a long, tough and winding road but at last, at last, we have arrived," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor as members prepared to vote for final passage. "Today, after more than a year of hard work, the Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation … [Read more...] about Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden
Love Island’s Aftersun SLAMMED by fans after ‘humiliating’ Danica
LOVE Island fans have slammed Aftersun for ‘humiliating’ Danica by showing her numerous rejections in the villa. On last night’s show Laura Whitmore played a Mission Impossible style clip of Danica's five attempts to find a man before meeting Jamie . The host said: “You were a woman on a bit of a mission, take a look at this.” The video then showed her finding ‘her targets’, who then friendzoned her one by one. Danica managed to laugh off the video, but those watching at home felt it was uncomfortable and questioned ITV’s decision. One person wrote: “You invited Danica to aftersun just to make fun of her? The producers must pay for their crimes!!! #LoveIsland.” Read More on Love Island 'it gets you down' Love Island’s Josh blasts producers & reveals he tried to quit the villa ring on it Love Island's Luke Trotman 'ENGAGED to girlfriend Chelsea after 3 month romance' A second said: “Can they … [Read more...] about Love Island’s Aftersun SLAMMED by fans after ‘humiliating’ Danica
David Sedaris looks into his crystal ball
I was with some houseguests not long ago, sitting around a table, when one of them mentioned a crystal ball she'd been thinking about buying. "Just to have," she said. "Then, I talked to a bunch of people and learned that it would suck all the energy out of whichever room it was in, which makes sense, I guess." "No, it doesn't," I said. Everyone looked at me, not just the woman who'd been talking - but our other two friends as well. "Crystal balls aren't real ." I said. "I mean, they don't actually do anything." "But they're crystal ," one of the two men said. "So, of course they have special powers." None of the three were what I'd call New Age-y, so their reverence for crystals surprised me. Just as it had surprised me a year earlier to hear them talking about ghosts, and of how they can come into your house by way of antiques, or second-hand clothing, like from the Goodwill or whatever, even if the coat or sweater in question has been dry-cleaned. They were all … [Read more...] about David Sedaris looks into his crystal ball
