The owner of a driving school and a foreign national faced a prosecutor in Elefsina, western Attica, Monday after the latter was allegedly caught being fed the answers to his theory test by the former by means of a wireless receiver. The alleged scam was busted last Thursday by members of the Greek Police’s motorcycle-riding DIAS unit during a routine crackdown on suspicious vehicles in the area. Callander driving test centre is to close because the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is unwilling to pay an extra £100 per year to keep it open, it has been revealed. The Observer reported last month that the test centre, located at McLaren Leisure Centre, was due to shut on May 23. DVSA bosses now say the decision has been taken because its rental agreement for a room within the facility, used by driving test staff, was due for renewal and McLaren leisure had increased its rental charge. However, the Observer has discovered the increase is believed to be five per cent – which would amount to an additional £100 per year to cover the increased costs. Callander’s centre hosted more than 450 tests in 2017/2018 and the rent increase would amount to an additional 22 pence per test. Tests are currently carried out from the Callander hub on Thursdays. Rural Stirlingshire’s learner drivers were this week facing a headache following the news that the test centre at Callander is to close. People looking to obtain a full driving licence will now have to travel to either Stirling or Crieff to sit their test if the closure goes ahead. Callander test centre, located at the McLaren Leisure centre, will close in May, meaning learners would be forced to travel an extra 14 miles to Stirling or an additional 16 miles to Crieff. Learners based in Tyndrum would have to travel up to 50 miles each way to sit their test. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) this week confirmed to the Observer that the test centre will close on May 23.
