Soaring unemployment is Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak refusing to inoculate communities against miserable joblessness. Enthusiastic Government propaganda about a vaccine bounce back ignores lengthening dole queues officially forecast to stretch to 2.6million in a return to the misery of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Others predict a total already up to 1.72m will climb even higher, particularly if the job-saving furlough scheme isn’t extended beyond the end of April when some lockdown restrictions will remain in place. Updated unemployment figures will be released by the Office for Budget Responsibility with next month’s Budget yet the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer brushing over lost livelihoods in their recovery propaganda is telling. Joblessness is a price that Tory Governments traditionally accept is worth paying by other people, twisting the knife by goading those in work to resent the workless relying on benefits to survive. Forge new post-COVID partnership with business, bosses urge Johnson
The government and private sector should forge a new partnership to fuel a post-pandemic recovery that could include greater financial contributions from businesses to aid policy reforms, some of Britain's leading bosses have told Boris Johnson. Sky News has seen an open letter sent to the prime minister by the COVID Recovery Commission, a group set up last year that is chaired by the Tesco chairman, John Allan, and includes top executives from AstraZeneca, Heathrow Airport, Shell and Vodafone. In it, the executives acknowledge that building a "stronger, fairer and more resilient" economy will involve "a recognition that business's place in the 21st century will be to serve more than just shareholders". The letter will be accompanied by the publication of a report on Friday - Building Back Together - in which the Commission raises the prospect of private sector employers investing more into a more effective apprenticeship scheme than the widely criticised Apprenticeship … [Read more...] about Forge new post-COVID partnership with business, bosses urge Johnson
School days could be lengthened and holidays shortened to help kids catch up
School days may be lengthened and holidays shortened to let pupils catch up, Gavin Williamson hinted today. The Education Secretary confirmed he is looking at “the whole expanse” of options to help left-behind children. He announced a short-term, £300m ‘recovery premium’ for catch-up schemes - worth about £6,000 for primaries and £22,000 for secondaries on average. Mr Williamson stopped short of confirming his long-term plans as all pupils return to schools in England on March 8. But questioned by Sky, he refused to rule out either lengthening the school day or shortening the summer break. A government source indicated the two options would be considered by Sir Kevan Collins, the Government's new catch up tsar, as part of a new review. And asked about the two options, Mr Williamson said: “We’re looking at a whole range of different actions. “What we wanted to do was give schools the extra resources they needed to be able to take action immediately. “Some of the … [Read more...] about School days could be lengthened and holidays shortened to help kids catch up
Watchdog urged to probe whether campaigns broke rules in anti-Labour attack ad blitz
The UK’s elections watchdog has been urged to investigate whether ‘third party’ campaign groups collaborated to flood social media with anti-Labour attack ads. Campaign groups spent as much as £700,000 on ads attacking Jeremy Corbyn and Labour policies during the 2019 election campaign, without declaring any of their donors. But they’re banned from joining forces to plan such campaigns to get around legal spending limits. The Mirror revealed on Friday that a group run by Tory activist Jennifer Powers had spent £65,000 on dozens of ads attacking Jeremy Corbyn and Labour on housing policy. But she flatly denied collaborating with anyone else, insisting she merely had an “amateur interest” in housing, and it was a “kitchen table” operation. But emails obtained by OpenDemocracy reveal striking similarities with another campaign run by a former Boris Johnson aide. The Fair Tax Campaign, founded by Alex Crowley, a former close aide of Boris Johnson, ran around 100 ads … [Read more...] about Watchdog urged to probe whether campaigns broke rules in anti-Labour attack ad blitz
COVID-19: Asda places 3,000 jobs at risk as part of online investment drive
Asda has warned that 3,000 workers in its stores are at risk of losing their jobs as the chain plans to ramp up investment in online sales. The UK's third-largest supermarket chain said the shake-up was driven by the shift in demand towards grocery deliveries which charged forward for the sector as a whole at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Asda said that while it had begun consultations with 5,000 of its back office store workers, it hoped the plan would result in a net gain in the number employed by the company. A union, which fought a pitched battle with Asda over new contracts just over a year ago, said it would fight to ensure no compulsory redundancies. But Asda said that, on a net basis, its plans would create 1,500 new jobs as it was seeking 4,500 staff to drive growth in online. Advertisement It was expected that many of those tipped to lose out would be able to take on one of the new roles, Asda said. Those facing the axe were … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Asda places 3,000 jobs at risk as part of online investment drive
