Brendan O'Neill 23 August 2019 2:47 PM 23 August 2019 2:47 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp Gillette has learned the hard way that if you annoy your customer base, your business will suffer. Ever since it released its woke men-bashing ad earlier this year, its sales have slumped. Who’d have thought it? Telling men they’re disgusting bullies and sexual harassers — as Gillette’s ad did — will not endear you to men! Blokes walked away from Gillette. They stopped buying its razors. Turns out that calling your customers scum isn’t a good idea. The ad was a transparent and nauseating attempt to win brownie points with the Twitterati and other woke folk in the #MeToo era. Editor's Note — The article below contains spoilers for "Midsommar." (CNN) — American filmmaker Ari Aster isn't expecting a thank you note from the Swedish tourism board any time soon. He's thrown the nation's favorite summer holiday off a cliff, delivered a hammer blow and burned it to a crisp -- and that's all before his latest movie really hits its stride. Aster, who lit up the indie film circuit last year with debut feature "Hereditary," returns with "Midsommar," which sees the writer-director jump from US suburbia to rural Scandinavia for a rummage around the toy box of European folk horror. What he pulls out needs to be seen to be believed, pushing the subgenre into twisted new territory. Standing on the shoulders of "Modern Romance" as much as "The Wicker Man," Aster's film answers the question "What would a break-up movie look like if it were set in a Swedish cult with a taste for theatrical bloodlust?" The results are both brutish and beautiful; a … [Read more...] about The horror beneath Swedish midsummer

There were OBEs for Oliver's Army crooner Elvis Costello, chief scout Bear Grylls, and Good Wife star Cush Jumbo. Along with the famous names, the list also celebrates the efforts of those working to improve people's lives. Of the 1,073 people honoured across the UK in this year's list, 47% are women - slightly down on some previous lists. 10.4% come from a BAME background - the highest ever, by a small margin, in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Olivia Colman Olivia Colman said she was "totally thrilled" and "humbled" to be made a CBE for services to drama. The Oscar-winner first found fame as Sophie, the girlfriend of David Mitchell's neurotic Mark, in the British comedy Peep Show. She said in a statement to the Press Association: "I'm totally thrilled, delighted and … [Read more...] about Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2019 in full
