More info Meghan Markle and Prince Harry faced much criticism after airing their complaints about treatment received whilst serving as working members of the Royal Family to Oprah Winfrey in 2021. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now been tipped for a second interview with the talk show presenter after being spotted leaving her home in California earlier last week. But commentator Dylan Howard questioned the subject the pair could focus on, suggesting Meghan and Harry would struggle to emerge victorious in a further confrontation with the Royal Family. It’s going to be incredibly hard for Democrats to protect abortion rights
President Joe Biden encapsulated what he hoped Democratic voters would understand after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade : “This fall, Roe is on the ballot.” There is some evidence that this message is sticking. A new CBS News/YouGov poll found that 50 per cent of Democratic voters said that the decision makes them more likely to vote compared to 77 per cent of Republicans who say it will have no effect on their likeliness to vote, though that might be due to the fact Republicans are already motivated to vote this midterm election to win back the House and Senate. The bad news for Democrats and good news for Republicans is that 61 per cent of independents say that it will have no effect on how likely they are to vote. But a majority of voters – 64 per cent altogether – say they want to keep abortion legal in either all or most cases and 51 per cent say the court’s decision will make life worse. FiveThirtyEight shows that the generic ballot, which … [Read more...] about It’s going to be incredibly hard for Democrats to protect abortion rights
Democrats go on the offensive over abortion as Republicans walk tightrope
For most of the past year Democrats have had to contend with voter dissatisfaction about rising grocery and gas prices, as well as the fact that the president’s party typically loses seats in the first midterm election. But a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist national poll found that if the election were held today, 48 per cent of registered voters said that they would vote for Democrats compared to 41 per cent who would vote for Republicans . There are, of course, reasons this does not automatically signal that Democrats will hold the House of Representatives. For one, that 48 per cent just looks at registered voters, not likely voters. Similarly, what voters think nationally doesn’t take into account how specific congressional districts or states will vote. That means that what candidates choose to emphasise and how they choose to talk about abortion will matter. Some Republicans, like Senate nominee Adam Laxalt, will try to take the issue off the table saying … [Read more...] about Democrats go on the offensive over abortion as Republicans walk tightrope
Today we learned January 6 wasn’t a directionless coup attempt. It was a targeted attack
“A handful of election officials in several key states stood between Donald Trump and the upending of American democracy.” That quote from Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) wasn’t hyperbolic. It was the straightforward truth that served as the defining theme of today’s hearing. The witnesses this afternoon were among that handful of election officials who stood against Trump’s attempted coup. Their testimony focused on the former president’s multi-state campaign to pressure state legislatures and election officials to overturn the 2020 election. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Georgia Secretary of State COO Gabriel Sterling, and Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers all testified about Trump’s pressure campaign and debunked his voter fraud lies. They are all Republicans. As if that weren’t damning enough, to close the hearing we heard from Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, a Georgia election worker who was attacked and threatened over the “suitcase of ballots” conspiracy theory. This … [Read more...] about Today we learned January 6 wasn’t a directionless coup attempt. It was a targeted attack
We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6. Remember them
On December 27, 2020, there was a call between then-President Trump, Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, and Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue. Trump’s pressure was relentless. They had to do more to investigate his voter fraud claims, he urged. Donoghue responded by telling Trump that the Justice Department just can’t snap its fingers and change the results of the election. Trump snapped back, ominously demanding: “Just say that the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.” That was an exact quote. Donoghue took notes. Today’s January 6 Committee hearing focused on the former president’s effort to twist the DOJ into his personal coup machine. The committee showed how Trump sought to force the DOJ to aid his multi-level pressure campaign to overturn the 2020 election. And when top officials refused, Trump tried to install someone who would — which culminated in an Oval Office showdown that could have changed the course of … [Read more...] about We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6.
