Zoe Thompson and island-based Middle East consultant Laura Cretney have launched the appeal to ask for donations of camping equipment, such as tents, sleeping bags, rucksacks and tarpaulins, blankets, men and women’s outdoor and waterproof clothing, shoes and underwear to be sent to refugees who are living in what Zoe describes as ’desperate conditions’ in temporary camps around the north of France.They have also asked for donations of baby care items, such as nappies, clothing, feeding bottles and baby milk powder, sanitary items, such as soap, shampoo and baby wipes and also feminine hygiene items, things which she says are in very short supply to the refugees.Zoe, who volunteers with refugee charities, runs the Facebook group Manx Support Refugees, said that the appeal has been … [Read more...] about Can you donate supplies for Syrian refugees?

The Government has announced it is to give an extra €1.25m in funding to Jordan to help with the humanitarian response to the Syria crisis.The funding was announced as Tánaiste Simon Coveney met with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al Safadi in Amman.He also visited the Za'atari Refugee Camp to observe the conditions in which refugees live, meet a refugee family and to see the work of agencies receiving support from Ireland.Mr Coveney said: "I am very glad to have had the opportunity to witness the valuable work that is being done to help refugees at Za'atari camp. BROMSGROVE and Redditch Welcome Refugees are collecting clothes and hosting a concert to help provide and raise money for refugees fleeing civil war. Volunteers from the group will be collecting donated clothes tomorrow (May 5) at The Bridge Church in Headless Cross. The group will be there between 2pm and 4pm and encourage everyone to help out. Sue Yeng, a member of the Committee at Welcome Refugees, said: “Adult clothing, practical shoes, backpacks, sleeping bags and blankets are all very much needed. “Clothing for all ages and sizes are required and we’d like to thank everyone in advance who is able to donate.” Meanwhile the group is also getting ready to host a folk and Indie concert called ‘Gimme Shelter’ on Thursday, May 10, at the Palace Studio. Dr Gautam Sharma, who sees NHS and private patients at his West Earlham Dental Health Practice, is days away from participating in a specialist charity mission, where he will provide dental care to refugee adults and children, as part of a recently established outreach programme. ANKARA – Anadolu Agency The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on April 11 launched a new two-year plan aiming to further improve lives of Syrian refugees in Turkey. The plan - titled the Syria Refugee Resilience Plan - aims to improve food security, strengthen livelihoods and enhance the resilience of Syrian refugees and host communities. Viorel Gutu, the FAO’s representative in Turkey, said they have been researching ways to help the Turkish government and Syrian refugees in terms of creating job opportunities. Gutu said their main target is ensuring a minimum level of quality of life for families, who are their main target. He added that the plan aims to provide adequate nutrition, education and healthcare to children. Gutu said many Turkish citizens are donating in the program, and praised the efforts of the Turkish government and people for continuing to host over 3 million Syrians.
