Ahead of tonight’s dinner in Salzburg, he says: ‘Today there is perhaps more hope but there is surely less and less time. On the Irish question and the framework for economic cooperation the UK’s proposal needs to be reworked’ The first sentence is classic Tusk; he has a fondness for statements that are meant to sound profound. His comments on the Irish border are also to be expected. The UK and the EU are still 48 kilometres apart on this question and playing a dangerous game of chicken. Theresa May’s Chequers plan will need to “reworked” in key areas including on future trade relations and on the question of the Irish border, the president of the European Council has said. Speaking ahead of an informal European Council meeting in Salzburg, Donald Tusk said Brexit talks were now entering “a decisive phase” - and that Mrs May's proposed deal already showed a "positive evolution of the UK's approach". It comes after Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, said thew EU is "ready to improve" its offer on the Irish border. EU member states could gather in mid-November to finalise a Brexit deal with the UK. European Council president Donald Tusk will propose an additional summit then to ensure an agreement is reached and that the UK and EU avoid a no deal scenario, saying today that there is “less and less time” to conclude negotiations. THE President of the European Council Donald Tusk wants a special summit of EU leaders to discuss Brexit. Tusk said there was still the possibility of the UK leaving the bloc without a deal which would be “catastrophic”. Why has Donald Tusk called for a special EU summit?
