EU chief Donald Tusk has accused the UK of "wasting time" over Brexit as the Tories plunge into a month-long leadership battle. The European Council President said he was "not happy" with Britain's political turmoil even though he can understand it is "political reality". It comes as Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt grapple to be Prime Minister two months after Mr Tusk granted a delay to Brexit. Back in April Mr Tusk begged: "Please do not waste this time." But since then Theresa May has resigned, a leadership race is under way and basic questions about Brexit remain unanswered. Only this morning Boris Johnson was accused of putting forward an inaccurate plan for how the UK could survive in a No Deal scenario. The frontrunner has also been accused of failing to clarify if he'll leave by October 31, instead saying we "must" leave on time and it is "eminently feasible". Quizzed as he left a press conference in Brussels, Mr Tusk said: "When it comes to Brexit as such, yes, I am afraid that … [Read more...] about EU’s Donald Tusk blasts UK for ‘wasting time’ over Brexit
WARSAW — Donald Tusk is arguably the most successful politician in Polish history — and a return to Polish politics could cement that status or tar him with the reputation of a loser. There is talk in Brussels and Warsaw that Tusk, president of the European Council, is looking at finishing up his political career with a run for the Polish presidency next May. The problem? Current opinion polls show that he’d lose to incumbent Andrzej Duda, closely allied with the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. “Tusk cannot lose. If he were to return to Poland and lose to Duda, it would mean political retirement for him. He will only run if there is a big chance of winning,” said Michał Szułdrzyński, deputy editor of the centrist Rzeczpospolita newspaper. Tusk, 62, was a youth activist in the Solidarity labor union, was elected to parliament in 1991, founded the Civic Platform party in 2001, failed in a 2005 bid to become president, was elected prime … [Read more...] about Donald Tusk’s Polish puzzle
Donald Tusk’s term as president of the European Council will end on 30 November, which is perfect timing for the Polish opposition. After the parliamentary election in late October, Poland will hold its presidential election in April 2020, and opposition voters already see Tusk as the only viable candidate. For the past year, Tusk has been dropping hints that he intends to return to Polish politics. “No one expects that after the conclusion of my term I will just be watching politics on television,” he recently said. Tusk is openly critical of the policies of Poland’s ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), and has heaped praise on the recently created European Coalition, an opposition grouping comprising his own party, Civic Platform (PO); the Polish People’s Party (PSL); the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD); and others. With the European Parliament election this month, Tusk has an early opportunity to start building a campaign profile. In his current role, he … [Read more...] about Can Donald Tusk Go Home Again?
EU president Donald Tusk today intervened in the European elections by urging Londoners to support a Change UK candidate running to become an MEP The EU’s most senior official endorsed his former deputy prime minister Jan Rostowski, who is running as a candidate in London, claiming he would make a “great MEP for London”. The staunch Remain backer, who has been highly critical of Britain’s plans to leave the EU and is a former Polish PM, said: “Jan Rostowski worked with me as finance minister of Poland for six years and then as my Deputy Prime Minister.” In a statement, he added: “Not only was he the best finance minister in Europe during the financial crisis, he is also a very dear friend who would make a great MEP for London, which I know he loves. “I urge Londoners who want Britain to stay in the EU to vote for him.” London-born Mr Rostowski served as Poland’s finance minister between 2007 and 2013 and was later deputy … [Read more...] about Donald Tusk urges Londoners to back Change UK candidate
