US President Donald Trump is using money donated to his re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) to pay for his lawyers in the probe of alleged Russian interference in the US election, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Following Reuters exclusive report on Tuesday, CNN reported that the Republican National Committee paid in August more than $230,000 to cover some of Trump’s legal fees related to the probe. RNC spokesperson Cassie Smedile confirmed to Reuters that Trump’s lead lawyer, John Dowd, received $100,000 from the RNC and that the RNC also paid $131,250 to the Constitutional Litigation and Advocacy Group, the law firm where Jay Sekulow, another of Trump’s lawyers, is a partner. The RNC is scheduled to disclose its August spending on Wednesday. The Trump campaign is due for a disclosure on 15 October. President Donald Trump’s allies are worried that the most damaging of the many recent departures from his White House may be that of Keith Schiller, a little-known former bodyguard who’s one of the President’s closest confidants outside his family. Schiller is leaving the White House soon to return to the private security business, according to three people familiar with his plans, for a job that will pay far more than his $165,000 government salary. His title, director of Oval Office operations, hardly begins to describe his importance to Trump, who is “crushed” by his planned departure, according to one person close to the President. Multiple people interviewed described Schiller as an emotional anchor for the President in a White House often marked by turmoil. Schiller has worked for Trump for nearly two decades, and within the West Wing he serves as the President’s protector, gate-keeper and wing man, according to people close to Schiller and … [Read more...] about Donald Trump ‘crushed’ by departure of long-serving bodyguard
The Secret Service has been so stretched by the frequency of Donald Trump's travels and the size of his family that it can no longer afford to pay agents. In an interview with USA Today, Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex'' Alles said that annual caps for overtime and salary for more than a thousand agents – which were meant to last the whole year – had already been reached. Almost every weekend since becoming president, Trump has travelled to one of his properties in Virginia, New Jersey, New York or Florida. These constant travels have stretched the resources of the Secret Service, who are also mandated to protect the president's family. "The president has a large family, and our responsibility is required in law,'' Alles said. "I can't change that. I have no flexibility.'' The number of people under Secret Service protection is up on the Obama era. Today, 42 individuals, including 18 members of the Trump family, are under protection, compared to the 31 that had the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s constant golf trips mean the Secret Service has run out of money to pay agents
White House Director of Strategic Communications Hope Hicks is reportedly likely to be appointed as the new communications director in the Donald Trump administration, according to a media report on Wednesday (16 August). The Daily Caller News Foundation cited an unnamed White House insider as saying that Hicks accepted the post after President Donald Trump offered her the job. However, there has been no other public confirmation on the appointment and Hicks is also yet to comment on the news. If confirmed, Hicks will replace Anthony Scaramucci, who was fired by Trump in July a few days after he took charge of the post from Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary. Scaramucci, also known as "the Mooch," was ousted from the post just 10 days after the wealthy New York financier joined the West Wing. He was reportedly removed at the request of the new White House chief of staff, former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. Hicks, who has been a close aide of Trump since the … [Read more...] about Hope Hicks to be appointed as Donald Trump’s new White House media chief?
I DON’T like to think I have much in common with Donald Trump — I have better hair for starters but that’s not saying much. But I’m beginning to somewhat agree with the US President when he lambasts “fake news”. It’s not that I think that he’s a great leader who deserves to be praised. Clearly the man has serious character flaws and I’ve huge concerns over his policies on immigration and health care reform. Yet the continual attacks on him by the US’s left-wing media are becoming a little bit like the boy who cried wolf. This week we saw author JK Rowling react to a video that she had seen posted online by a reporter in which Donald Trump appeared to ignore a young disabled boy’s handshake. In a lengthy tirade, she branded Trump “a monster of narcissism” for his disgusting behaviour — she always had a way with words that JK. Unfortunately for Rowling, who I admire, Trump had in fact spent time with the … [Read more...] about I’m beginning to somewhat agree with US President Donald Trump when he lambasts ‘fake news’
Apparently sick of what he refers to as the 'Fake News' media, Donald Trump has set up as a 'real news' show to list his achievements as President. The show, hosted on Facebook, is fronted by Mr Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump. As the rest of the media spoke about the recent turmoil in the White House, this programme attempted to draw attention to what the Trumps see as the President's achievements of the week. The first segment shows his son Eric Trump's pregnant wife listing these achievements. She begins this by saying: "I bet you haven't heard about all the accomplishments the president had this week because there's so much fake news out there". In the video, which has over two million views, Mrs Trump said she is "proud" of the fact her father-in-law donated this quarter's salary to the Department of Education, after giving it to the Parks Department in the previous quarter. She said: "This is a President who is putting America before himself". She also … [Read more...] about Donald Trump launches new ‘real news’ show with his daughter-in-law to list his achievements
Donald Trump is donating his second-quarter earnings as president to the Department of Education. The donation was announced in a press conference on Wednesday 27 July by the press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Sanders presented a cheque of $100,000 to the Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who announced that the money would go towards hosting a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) camp for children at the department. DeVos said: "The president is committed to our nation's students and to reforming education in America so that every child, no matter their ZIP Code, has access to a high-quality education. "The economy of tomorrow requires engaged students, boys and girls, are prepared for STEM careers. We want to encourage as many children as possible to explore STEM fields in the hope that many develop a passion for these fields." Donald Trump's new communications director has denied publicly asking the FBI to investigate his chief of staff on Twitter. Anthony Scaramucci deleted a tweet that was interpreted as calling for the FBI to investigate Reince Priebus for leaking. Mr Scaramucci had tweeted: "In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept #swamp @Reince45" The tweet tagged Mr Priebus's Twitter account. "In case there's any ambiguity in his tweet I can confirm that Scaramucci wants the FBI to investigate Reince for leaking," New York Times reporter Ryan Lizza wrote on Twitter. After Mr Scaramucci deleted his tweet, he responded to an Axios article about the story to say: "Wrong! Tweet was public notice to leakers that all Sr Adm officials are helping to end illegal leaks. @Reince45" His initial tweet appeared to be a reference to a Politico report revealing he will still be able to profit from his stake in his … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s press chief denies publicly asking FBI to investigate Trump’s chief of staff’
The Trump administration has pushed forward with its bid to undo an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay to 4.2 million workers and said it was considering treating workers differently based on location and industry. The rule, which was supposed to take effect in December 2016 but was blocked by a federal judge, is a top target for business groups that say it would force employers to convert many salaried employees into hourly workers. The US Department of Labour on Tuesday called for public comments on the rule, which is the first step in revoking or revising it. The rule would have doubled to $47,000 the maximum salary a worker can earn and still be eligible for mandatory overtime pay under federal wage law. A group of 21 states and business groups including the US Chamber of Commerce challenged the rule in a lawsuit filed last year. The Labour Department appealed the judge's decision temporarily blocking the rule to a New Orleans-based US appeals court … [Read more...] about Donald Trump is about to overturn Obama’s overtime pay law
Dozens of teen pregnancy prevention programs deemed ineffective by President Donald Trump's administration will lose more than $200 million in funding following a surprise decision to end five-year grants after only three years. The administration's assessment is in sharp contrast with that of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which credited the program with contributing to an all-time low rate of teen pregnancies. Rachel Fey of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy said Tuesday that grantees under the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program were given no explanation when notified this month their awards will end next June. The program, begun under President Barack Obama's administration, receives about $100 million a year. "We know so little about the rationale behind cutting short these grants," said Fey, who said the teen birth rate has fallen by about 40 percent nationally since the program went into effect in 2010. The focus of the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump administration cuts short anti-teen pregnancy grants
The pay gap between male and female White House staffers has more than tripled in the first year of the Trump administration, according to an analysis by economist Mark Perry of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). The median female White House employee is drawing a salary of $72,650 in 2017, compared to the median male salary of $115,000. “The typical female staffer in Trump's White House earns 63.2 cents per $1 earned by a typical male staffer,” Perry writes. The 37 percent gender pay gap in Trump's White House is more than double the 17 percent gender pay gap nationally. According to the Pew Research centre, the Trump White House gender gap is wider than the national gender pay gap stood in 1980. Other news outlets have reported smaller Trump White House pay gaps. But those outlets calculated the pay gap using average, rather than median salaries. Averages are often skewed by outliers at the high and low ends of the income spectrum, making them less reliable for … [Read more...] about White House gender pay gap more than triples under Donald Trump

Rupert Murdoch was in the room when Donald Trump gave his first post-election foreign newspaper interview in the UK to the Times and former government minister Michael Gove. It is unclear whether the media mogul was present throughout the interview, held in Trump Tower in New York, or simply introduced the Times columnist to the president, although the Financial Times said Murdoch sat through the whole interview. Murdoch, whose News Corp owns the Times, is believed to have orchestrated the meeting between the former Conservative minister and the president but details of his presence emerged weeks after the hour-long meeting. The interview confirmed the Murdoch empire as Trump’s favourite media outlet; he has granted regular access to Sean Hannity of Fox News, also owned by Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox. One insider at News Corp said Murdoch would be unlikely to have sat quietly throughout the interview and could just have introduced them at the beginning. He appeared in none … [Read more...] about Rupert Murdoch was in room for Michael Gove’s Donald Trump interview

President Donald Trump has donated the first three months of his salary to a government agency which conserves America’s parks. White House spokesman Sean Spicer held up a cheque for $78,333.32 in front of reporters, the first quarterly chunk of the US leader’s salary. The money will go to the National Parks Service, a government body that manages all of the country’s parks. Making the announcement to media, Mr Spicer said: “I wanted to give you a quick update on something. I know in the past there's been several questions about the President donating his salary to charity. I've got an update for you on that. "To that end the President has spoken with council and made the decision to donate his first quarter salary in total to a government entity and he has chosen, this quarter, to donate it to the National Parks Service. If you’re wondering how much Donald Trump’s top employees actually have in the bank, the President has released details of the finances of his highest ranking staffers - including his son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka. One thing is for certain, he has surrounded himself with some very affluent advisors. White House ethics officials said that they legally required disclosure documents to provide a snapshot of the what each of his top adviser's finances looked like when they joined the government service in January. The documents revealed the earnings of Jared Kushner and wife Ivanka Trump, detailing a sum of $700 million in investments and assets between the pair. Kushner, the president’s senior advisor, outlined his and his wife’s assets in a 54-page report. Before Trump’s election, Kushner resigned from all of their business entities and sold off 58 assets, while Ivanka stepped away from the day to day running of her fashion business. From his calls to jail his opponent to his conflicting statements about barring Muslims from the United States, America’s next president has provoked a striking number of questions about how he would govern. Here is an early — and surely incomplete — list of some of the biggest: 1. Will he seek to prosecute Hillary Clinton? Trump has egged on his supporters’ chants of “Lock her up,” predicted that Clinton would be “in jail” if he were president and promised to appoint a special prosecutor to “investigate Hillary Clinton’s crimes.” Tuesday night’s victory speech was conciliatory — “we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country,” Trump said — but on Wednesday, his campaign manager passed up an opportunity to disavow the idea, saying only, “We haven’t discussed that in recent days, and I think that it’s all in due time.” For its part, the White … [Read more...] about 11 questions for President-elect Donald Trump
