The US has begun making a new, low-yield nuclear warhead for its Trident missiles that arms control advocates warn could lower the threshold for a nuclear conflict. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced in an email it had started manufacturing the weapon at its Pantex nuclear weapons plant in Texas, as ordered by Donald Trump’s nuclear posture review (NPR) last year. The NNSA said the first of the new warheads had come off the production line and that it was on schedule to deliver the first batch – an unspecified number referred to as “initial operational capability” – before the end of September. The new weapon, the W76-2, is a modification of the existing Trident warhead. Stephen Young, a senior Washington representative of the Union of Concerned Scientists, said its yield had most likely been cut by taking away one stage from the original two-stage, W76 thermonuclear device. “As best we can tell, the only requirement is to … [Read more...] about US nuclear weapons: first low-yield warheads roll off the production line

NORTH Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to a 'complete denuclearisation' of the Korean Peninsula after a summit with Donald Trump in June, 2018. Let's take a look at the rogue state's controversial nuclear weapons programme. What is the latest on the nuclear situation in North Korea? On April 21, 2018, Kim Jong-un said the reclusive nation was suspending long-range nuclear missile tests and shutting its test site. At the Singapore summit on June 11, 2018, Trump and Kim agreed to start the denuclearisation "very quickly". The US President said the meeting had gone "better than anyone could have expected". PYONGYANG, North Korea -- The leaders of the rival Koreas took to the road for the final day of their summit Thursday, standing on the peak of a beautiful volcano used as a centerpiece of propaganda to legitimize the Kim family's rule, their hands clasped and raised in a pose of triumph. Their trip to the mountain on the North Korean-Chinese border, and the striking photo-op that will resonate in both Koreas, followed a day of wide-ranging agreements they trumpeted as a major step toward peace. However, their premier accord on the issue that most worries the world -- the North's pursuit of nuclear-tipped missiles that can accurately strike the U.S. mainland -- contained a big condition: Kim Jong Un stated that he would permanently dismantle North Korea's main nuclear facility only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures. Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in flew separately to an airport near Mount Paektu on Thursday morning where they then met up and drove … [Read more...] about Kim Jong Un caps North Korea summit in high style amid praise from Donald Trump
