David Jackson USA TODAY Published 8:42 PM EDT Jun 27, 2019 OSAKA, Japan – Facing a G20 summit featuring meetings with rivals like China and Russia, President Donald Trump arrived on site Thursday after bashing some longtime U.S. allies – including Japan, his summit host. Trump used a Fox Business Network interview to hit Japan and Germany over mutual defense commitments, and later tweeted out criticism of India over new tariffs it has imposed on the United States. "Almost all countries in this world take tremendous advantage of the United States," Trump told Fox. "It's unbelievable, OK?" The United States is obligated by treaty to defend Japan if it is attacked, Trump complained to Fox, "but if we’re attacked, Japan doesn’t have to help us at all ... They can watch it on a Sony television.” The criticism came a month after Trump visited Japan to meet the new emperor. The US President said he expected the “incredible intelligence relationship” with the UK would continue. Co-operation between US and UK spies has been threatened by the prospect of Huawei playing a part in Britain’s 5G mobile internet infrastructure. Washington has banned the firm from involvement in US networks because of its alleged links to Beijing’s government – claims vehemently denied by Huwaei – and has pushed for other member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, including the UK, to do the same. Reports have suggested the UK Government could be prepared to allow the firm to play a role in “non-core” parts of the network but officials have … [Read more...] about Donald Trump predicts UK-US agreement on Huawei
Donald Trump has told Theresa May to "stick around" for a "very substantial" trade deal with the US - despite the fact the Tory leader is resigning in three days. Aides laughed at a breakfast meeting as the US President admitted he didn't know exactly when the Prime Minister will be leaving office. Mrs May bowed to huge pressure and will resign on Friday, becoming a lame duck Prime Minister until a new Tory leader is in place at the end of July. But Trump trumped a US trade deal after Brexit as HE congratulated Mrs May for doing a "fantastic job on behalf of the people of the United States." He added: "It's an honour to have worked with you. I don't know exactly what your timing is but stick around! Let's do this deal." The pair met at a breakfast meeting at St James's Palace this morning ahead of talks, lunch and a press conference at 10 Downing Street. Theresa May was snubbed for a formal one-on-one meeting, with both sides instead bringing a delegation of aides and ministers. … [Read more...] about Donald Trump tells Theresa May to ‘stick around’
Donald Trump will land in the UK on Monday amid anger over comments made by his ambassador suggesting the NHS should be “on the table” in future trade negotiations. His visit also came as cabinet ministers vying for the Tory leadership suggested they could tear up plans for the Chinese tech giant Huawei to build parts of the UK’s 5G network, after the ambassador, Woody Johnson, warned it was “a big risk”. Trump, who will meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace on the first day of his state visit, will be met by thousands of protesters in London the following day during a visit packed with pomp, pageantry and controversy that has seen numerous calls for its cancellation. Johnson stoked opposition on Sunday after suggesting the UK would need to allow US agricultural products, including chlorinated chicken, on to the UK market as part of any post-Brexit trade deal, as well as US private sector involvement in the NHS. The administration is said to see the visit as … [Read more...] about Donald Trump to land in UK amid rising anger over trade demands
For years, American executives and politicians expressed their fears of China quietly. They feared angering its leaders and losing access to its market. Donald Trump has no such qualms. Encouraged by his hawkish advisers, he has decided to confront China aggressively on issues from trade to spying. Huawei, the world’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment and an emblem of China’s emergence as an economic superpower, is just the latest victim of an escalating conflict between the US and its increasingly potent and strident challenger. Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei has compared his firm of 180,000 employees, 1,400 of them in the UK, to “a small sesame seed, stuck in the middle of conflict between two great powers”. This week, the sesame seed was squeezed further as Washington decided Huawei will need US government approval to buy American-made components and software for its devices. The Trump administration suspects the company is an arm of the Chinese … [Read more...] about Donald Trump vs China: Where will the crisis lead to next?
