International Women’s Day should inspire our efforts throughout the rest of the year
Fairer sex WAKEY wakey, rise up and shine! Today is International Women’s Day , an event that in its 110-year history has passed by under the radar too often. Well not this year, and not in The Sun. The UK has come a long way since 1911, when women couldn’t even vote, but there is still much to do, not least closing the gender pay gap, which will take nearly 100 years at the current rate. The past year has tragically widened inequalities, with women accounting for two-thirds of global job losses. And yet the Covid crisis has also brought women’s strengths to the fore. International Women’s Day: Why there are so few female coaches in elite sport
When Gitta Axmann talks about her football coaching badge course from 2009, the unpleasant memories come flooding back. "They thought I was part of the cleaning team," she tells DW. "And then out on the pitch, it was a case of: 'The woman at the back, she can't do it.'" Stereotypes, demeaning comments, little acknowledgement of ability or competence. That was eleven years ago, but the level of acceptance of women in elite coaching positions in Germany remains small. According to figures compiled by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), 47% of professional coaching badge holders are women. Yet as the level increases, the proportion of female coaches plummets. In elite sport, women make up only 13% of coaches, figures which have been stagnating for years. Stale stereotypes There are several different reasons for this, explains Axmann, nowadays a researcher at the institute for sports sociology and gender studies at the German Sports University in Cologne. Chief … [Read more...] about International Women’s Day: Why there are so few female coaches in elite sport
Inspirational Women of the year from Oxford vaccine creator to Marcus Rashford’s mum
The great-grandaughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst has called for more women in power to prevent further gender inequality made worse by the pandemic. Ahead of International Women’s Day, activist Dr Helen Pankhurst - whose grandmother was Emmeline’s daughter, campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst - said the UK’s predominantly male leadership has risked women’s lives throughout the Covid-19 response. Her damning comments come as it’s revealed that 77% of frontline workers are women - but only a quarter made up the coronavirus taskforce tackling the pandemic in the UK. Dr Pankhurst, 56, told the Sunday Mirror: “We need more women in leadership because otherwise women are marginalised. What do you think? Share your views in the comments below... “You must have that lens of someone in policy-making who understands - it doesn’t work if you only have the male perspective. “Policies need to reflect women’s realities - and at the moment just 34% of women are MPs. And that … [Read more...] about Inspirational Women of the year from Oxford vaccine creator to Marcus Rashford’s mum
