I was trying to think a few hours ago – after his shameful, outrageous, insane breaking of a solemn international treaty – just who Donald Trump reminded me of. I used to think about the boastful, gung-ho racist Theodore Roosevelt, the ‘Rough Rider’ who enjoyed war (and threats). But Theodore Roosevelt actually did win the Nobel Peace Prize. And then I realised. The political leader who most resembles Trump is the late Colonel Gaddafi of Libya. The parallels are quite creepy. Gaddafi was crackers, he was a vain, capricious peacock of a man, he was obsessed with women, he even had a ghost writer invent a ‘Green Book’ of his personal philosophy, just as Trump had his business manual written for him. Gaddafi was vengeful towards his opponents but his views on the Middle East were odd, to say the least. He once advocated a one-state solution to Israel and Palestine which – in all seriousness – he suggested should be called … [Read more...] about Donald Trump has shown himself to be the American version of Gaddafi in his behaviour towards Iran and the nuclear deal

Oil prices rose more than two per cent this morning, in the wake of Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Speaking from the White House last night, the US President said he believed there was no way to "prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying, rotten structure of the current agreement”. “Iran’s bloody ambitions have grown only more brazen,” he added. Shortly after the announcement, US Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin said that licenses for Boeing to sell aircraft and components to Iran will be revoked as a result of the reimposed sanctions. “Under the original deal, there were waivers for commercial aircraft, parts and services and the existing licences will be revoked,” Mnuchin said. Trump had been talking up the anti-deal rhetoric for months. However the move has still had an impact on prices, with WTI Crude up 2.2 per cent to $70.6 a barrel, while Brent Crude was up 2.4 per cent to $76.7 a barrel. It’s not quite true to say that Trump has “torn up” the deal. The other signatories – the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany – have expressed... He’s said all along he would and this Commander-in-Chief’s number one public image rule is that, unlike most politicians, he honours his word. Trump’s other big rule is that anything Obama has done he’ll undo. And Obama’s biggest achievement, according to his admirers and former staffers, was the Iran deal, which – in theory anyway — stopped Tehran from acquiring nukes while strengthening democratic forces within the troubled Muslim state. The pride with which Team Obama held up the deal was precisely why Team Trump wanted to destroy. And with his new hawkish cabinet — a war cabinet, as Jacob Heilbrunn called it recently —any obstacles to his tearing up the deal were removed. As one … [Read more...] about Donald Trump pulls out of the Iran deal. Is anyone surprised?
8 May 2018 • 4:35pm What happens if Donald Trump pulls out of the Iran deal? A summary of the Iran nuclear deal How Iran will look to reshape the Middle East if the nuclear deal unravels Senior British diplomats say the UK government is "deeply pessimistic" about Donald Trump announcement over the Iran nuclear deal this evening. Mr Trump is widely expected to withdraw from key parts of the agreement - if not the entire deal. The US president had a phone call with Emmanuel Macron, the French President, to discuss his decision on the Iran nuclear at 10am ET (2pm in the UK). Mr Macron lobbied the US President to stay in the accord during his State Visit - the first of Mr Trump's administration - but appeared unable to convince him. The two leaders discussed "issues related to peace and stability in the Middle East" during their phone call on Tuesday, Mr Macron's office said. Other European officials have also rushed to Washington … [Read more...] about UK ‘deeply pessimistic’ over Donald Trump’s Iran nuclear deal announcement
