The images that follow a chemical weapons attack can be difficult to look at: infants gasping for breath and receiving CPR from rescue workers; mothers screaming desperately; children being sprayed with water to help wash off the chemicals; people foaming at the mouth. Such images could be seen following the suspected chemical weapons attack last Saturday on the Syrian city of Douma, a rebel-held suburb of Damascus. Although it isn't possible to verify the authenticity of every photo or prove beyond doubt that the Assad regime was behind it, the April 7 attack still alarmed an international community that has otherwise followed the war in Syria with relative apathy. The horrific images and news of the use of chemical weapons banned under international law succeeded in doing what other terrible news coming out of Syria has failed to: United States President Donald Trump has raised the prospect of punitive military action that would exceed all previous Western interventions against the … [Read more...] about ‘Get Ready Russia’: Donald Trump Risks a World War in Syria

Russian forces will shoot down any US missiles fired at Syria and attack the aircraft or warships they are fired from, the Russian ambassador to Lebanon has warned. “If there is an American strike, then we... will shoot down the missiles and target the positions from where they were launched,” said Alexander Zasypkin, the Russian envoy to Beirut. “In the past few days, we have seen an escalation towards a significant crisis." Mr Zasypkin’s comments, made in an interview with a Hizbollah-affiliated television channel, are the sternest Russian warning yet against American strikes. They go beyond previous threats that Russian troops would use their missile defence systems to shield the Assad regime. The Russian ambassador spoke as Eurocontrol, the pan-European air traffic control agency, warned civilian airliners to be cautious above the eastern Mediterranean because of the possibility of strikes in the next 72 hours. The agency warned that … [Read more...] about Russia vows to shoot down US missiles if Donald Trump launches strikes against Syria
President Donald Trump’s turbulent first year in office begs an important question for Republican congressmen defending their seats in November: Is anyone safe? In the swath of rural northern Illinois between DeKalb, Kane and McHenry counties, there is a trio of incumbent U.S. representatives – Adam Kinzinger, D-16, Peter Roskam, D-6, and Randy Hultgren, D-14 – who vote with Trump more than 90 percent of the time. They now face three Democratic opponents posing threats to their seats in an election that may be primed for a "blue wave." It's typical for the sitting president's party to lose seats in Congress during midterms, but talks of the wave also stem from Democrat Conor Lamb’s victory last month in a Pennsylvania House district that President Donald Trump won by almost 20 points in 2016. Democrats are now eyeing their chance to retake Congress. "We’re seeing enthusiasm for change and having a voice in congress that reflects our values," said Lauren … [Read more...] about Are Illinois Congressmen safe in wake of Donald Trump?
Donald Trump is set to hit Russia with a new wave of economic sanctions on Thursday, with oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin expected to be affected. Yulia Skripal, the daughter of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal, has spoken for the first time since their poisoning to say her father was “sleeping”. It raises hopes that both may survive the Salisbury attack and give investigators vital clues about how they were poisoned and why they were targeted. Russia’s war of words with Britain escalated on Wednesday, with Alexander Yakovenko, the Russian ambassador to London, giving a 90-minute press conference. He said Russia had never possessed or produced novichok, the nerve agent used in the attack, and claimed Moscow’s offer of consular support to Ms Skripal had been denied. The Foreign Office said Ms Skripal had rejected the request herself. Senior US officials have said that more action would be taken against Russia to … [Read more...] about Donald Trump set to hit Russian oligarchs with new sanctions
Donald Trump is again attacking the online retailer Amazon, calling its business deal with the US Postal Service to deliver packages a money losing agreement that hurts US taxpayers. Federal regulators, however, have found the contract with Amazon to be profitable. In tweets on Saturday, Mr Trump said “the US Post Office will lose $1.50 (£1) on average for each package it delivers for Amazon. That amounts to billions of dollars”. He added: “If the PO ‘increased its parcel rates, Amazon’s shipping costs would rise by $2.6 Billion’. This post office scam must stop. Amazon must pay real costs (and taxes) now!” Read more Donald Trump orders suspension of $200m in recovery aid for Syria Donald Trump openly attacks Amazon over taxes and business practices Donald Trump says Second Amendment ‘will never be repealed’ Donald Trump ‘wants the military to pay’ for his Mexico border wall These farmers voted … [Read more...] about Donald Trump renews attack on Amazon as he accuses retailer of running a US Post Office ‘scam’
