opinion Jason Sattler Opinion columnist Published 11:24 p.m. UTC May 29, 2018 Roseanne Barr thought she would get away with it because she had already gotten away with it. Even before ABC canceled her show over a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett that the network called “abhorrent” and “repugnant,” she had logged a long history of embracing right-wing conspiracy theories. This wasn't even the first time she compared an African-American woman in the Obama administration to an ape. The actress deleted a number of her more controversial tweets as she prepared to return to prime time. The surprise success of the reboot that cast her as a working-class Donald Trump supporter was positively Trumpian — except she actually won the popular vote. On TV, Roseanne Conner is caught up in Trump’s promise of jobs and renewed patriotism. Her suspicions of the “other,” like her … [Read more...] about Roseanne Barr just learned that no one gets to be Donald Trump. Not even her.
Picture: AFP Director Clapper, we are clearly in an unusual situation, where the president of the United States has called for the Justice Department to investigate itself -- or at least to investigate the FBI for alleged political corruption. You’ve expressed the view that this is an unprecedented and dangerous situation. Well, I’m a big believer in the traditional norms and standards of this country, and one of which is an independent Department of Justice and independent FBI. I think it’s very worrisome when the president injects himself in terms of directing an investigation, particularly one that pertains to an investigation on him. I think this is one of a number of assaults on our institutions that I find very bothersome. Meaning assaults by President Trump. Yes. How do you view the people who are in charge at the agencies that you used to run, or that you know about: Gina Haspel at CIA, Mike Rogers at NSA, Chris Wray at the FBI, Dan Coats, who has … [Read more...] about James Clapper on Donald Trump, Edward Snowden, torture and “the knowability of truth”
opinion James S. Robbins Opinion columnist Published 9:11 p.m. UTC May 21, 2018 President Trump is ordering the Justice Department formally to examine whether the Obama administration used the FBI to attempt a political hit on his 2016 campaign. It’s about time. On Sunday the president tweeted that he will instruct the DOJ to investigate whether the FBI/DOJ “infiltrated or surveilled the Trump campaign for political purposes.” The last three words are key, because we already know the Trump campaign was under FBI "surveillance." Only the motive and who gave the orders remains a mystery. Remember the umbrage in March 2017 when the president said that he had been “wiretapped” before the election? Then-FBI Director James Comey testified he had had “no information” to support that idea, and he had “looked carefully inside the FBI." Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said there was no surveillance, … [Read more...] about Crossfire Hurricane: Pull back curtain on FBI’s investigation of Donald Trump, Russia
Donald Trump has revealed in his financial disclosure that he reimbursed his personal lawyer for unspecified “expenses”, with no mention of a payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about a sexual tryst she said they had. The head of the nation’s ethics office questioned why Mr Trump did not include this in his previous year’s sworn disclosure and passed along his concerns to federal prosecutors. “I am providing both reports to you because you may find the disclosure relevant to any inquiry you may be pursuing,” David Apol, acting director of the Office of Government Ethics (OGE), wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Mr Apol wrote that he considers Mr Trump’s payment to Michael Cohen to be a repayment on a loan and that it was required to be included in Mr Trump’s June 2017 disclosure. Mr Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani told Fox News Channel’s Laura Ingraham that the US president was “fully … [Read more...] about Donald Trump disclosure of lawyer payment raises legal questions
