MK Dons got off to life in League 2 in winning fashion after beating Oldham Athletic 2-1 in a fiery encounter at Boundary Park on Saturday. Kieran Agard and Ryan Harley struck in the first half for Paul Tisdale's side before Dan Gardner's goal five minutes before the break put Oldham back into the game and put them in the ascendancy for the second period. It was an attritional battle for the visitors though, with Peter Pawlett, Robbie Simpson, Jordan Houghton and Callum Brittain all picking up injuries, while Dons finished the game with 10 men when Conor McGrandles was stretchered from the field with a nasty head injury.Certainly not the most complete performance from an MK Dons side, but three vital points at the full time whistle.Having originally been pencilled in for a return in December, Alex Gilbey made his eagerly anticipated return to first team action for Paul Tisdale's first league game in charge, four months ahead of schedule. Derek McInnes reckons Aberdeen have missed out on more trophies because they don’t have the cash to keep their star players. The Dons have been title runners-up for four seasons in a row, on top of their League Cup triumph in 2014. But McInnes is adamant the club would have challenged for more silverware if they could afford to keep their top stars. He said: “We’re judged now on how we do up against the Old Firm and not so long ago that wasn’t the case. “It pleases me that people now put us in that bracket and we’ve earned … [Read more...] about Dons can’t compete because we don’t have enough money to keep star men
Doncaster RLFC continue to lose ground in the Betfred League One promotion race after going down 32-12 against top-four rivals Oldham on their 4G Vestacare Stadium pitch. Having lost three more games than leaders Bradford Bulls it is looking increasingly likely that the Dons’ best chance of a return to the Championship will now be via the play-offs rather than top spot. But not even a top-five spot is guaranteed unless results in key four-pointers start to improve.Third-placed Oldham, now unbeaten in their last six league games, looked all set to take an early lead but centre Jack Holmes dropped the ball when diving for the line. The Dons had a spell on the attack before finding themselves under pressure from a kick and but for stand-off Jordan Howden palming the ball away would have found themselves 4-0 down with the kick to come.Oldham’s pressure finally paid off just before the end of the first quarter when second-rower Danny Langtree – their most consistent player … [Read more...] about Oldham Roughyeds 32 Doncaster RLFC 12: Dons lose ground in League One promotion race

The Swiss ace came from being a set down to beat Robin Haase in the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam Open 4-6 6-1 6-1 on Friday (16 February). The 36-year-old replaces Rafael Nadal to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time since 2012 and eclipses Andre Agassi as the most senior player to reach the summit of the sport. In doing so, he will add further gloss to his remarkable record of 302 weeks at the top of the table, more than any other player. Federer will now extend his record at the top as Nadal looks to reclaim his crown when he takes the stage at the Mexico Open, starting on 26 February. Federer's record of 302 weeks at the top is followed by Pete Sampras with 286 weeks, Ivan Lendl with 270, Jimmy Connors with 268, Novak Djokovic with 223, John McEnroe with 170 and Nadal with 167.
