Ukraine aims to ban Russian election observers
Ukraine fears that Russia could – by making use of its representatives in international observation missions – interfere with the presidential elections scheduled for March 31. Kyiv believes it's possible that Russian election observers, in particular, could become a "weak spot" when they supervise the voting process and vote count. For this reason, Parliament on Thursday passed a law which bans Russian nationals from taking part in the planned election observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The law stipulates that citizens of a country that has been classified as an "aggressor state" by Ukraine's parliament cannot be employed as observers – neither in the Ukraine presidential elections in spring, nor in the Ukraine parliamentary elections in autumn. Kyiv has categorized the Russian Federation as an "aggressor state" – due to Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula, which was against … [Read more...] about Ukraine aims to ban Russian election observers

Sophie Mackintosh: ‘There is a special place in my heart for Danielle Steel’
The book I am currently readingThings to Make and Break by May-Lan Tan is one of the strongest short story collections I’ve read in ages – sharp, strange and crystalline. I’m alternating it with The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, to remind me of what the best speculative fiction can do. The book that changed my lifeBluets by Maggie Nelson, a series of vignettes loosely based around the colour blue. I like work that plays with genre. Is Bluets poetry, memoir, essay? Who knows – it’s just brilliant. The book I wish I’d writtenMorvern Callar by Alan Warner. It’s chilling and darkly funny and the film soundtrack (lifted from the book) is brilliant. I’m very into unlikable heroines. The book that most influenced my writingThe Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter – I read it in my teens, and I remember feeling startled and amazed by it. It presses the mundane up against the magical, all wrapped up in dreamlike prose. The book I think … [Read more...] about Sophie Mackintosh: ‘There is a special place in my heart for Danielle Steel’
Refugees on new Balkan route stuck in limbo
The camp outside of the city of Velika Kladusa in Bosnia and Herzegovina is growing every day. Its inhabitants: men, women, and children taking the new Balkan route as refugees in search of safety and security in Europe. Here their lodgings consist of improvised tents at best, but more often than not, the only "roof" over their heads is a thin plastic tarp supported by sticks. When it rains, the camp gets particularly bad: wet tents and mud everywhere. "This is not a refugee camp," Kasim from Pakistan said. "It was good in Serbia. We had food and received clothing and good tents there. Here, we have nothing." Changed route The former "Balkan route" used to lead from Greece through Macedonia and Serbia to Croatia or Hungary. Since early 2018, however, there has been a new route. Because the Serbian border with EU countries is practically impassable now, refugees are trying to reach Croatia via Bosnia and Herzegovina instead. They are currently concentrated in two … [Read more...] about Refugees on new Balkan route stuck in limbo
