A barrister has told how his leg ‘burst open’ after he was bitten by a deadly spider during a flight. Jonathon Hogg’s leg ballooned minutes after he felt a sharp pain on the plane to South Africa. By the time he reached hospital it had turned black and to save the limb surgeons had to cut away a large part of his leg where the venom had eaten the flesh. He was left with a gaping hole on the front of his shin. ‘The pain was like nothing I’ve been through in my life,’ said Mr Hogg, 40, who is now taking legal action against the airline. ‘By the time I got to hospital my leg was bursting open, there was pus, it was black. It was a right mess. They told me if I had been any later I would have lost my leg or even died. It was terrifying.’ 'Like something from a horror film': Jonathon Hogg's leg, which is too graphic to show in full, ballooned and 'burst open' after being bitten by a potentially deadly spider which he believes … [Read more...] about I almost lost my leg after flesh eating spider bite on a plane: British barrister explains how shin burst open during flight from Qatar to South Africa

Swiss Alps: old huts to chic chalets
After a long ascent via hairpins through smaller and smaller villages in the Swiss Alps, the bumpy track around the mountainside eventually petered out into a stony path, indicating we had reached the end of our journey. I had the sinking feeling that we were in the wrong place. There should have been a collection of high-design chalets around here somewhere, all floor-to-ceiling glass and exposed concrete, according to the website images. But all I could see were a handful of dilapidated wooden farm sheds. I bundled the toddlers out of the car and walked closer, worrying that we had accidentally booked somewhere very basic and inappropriate for them and their grandparents. A discreet sign reading “Anako Lodge” reassured me; we were where we were meant to be. At the back of the first hut, we spied a couple in a wooden hot-tub, wine on a table beside them. Then our own little hut, the Mayen à Madeleine, where a peek inside revealed modern interiors – like the … [Read more...] about Swiss Alps: old huts to chic chalets

Lounging around for two weeks over Christmas could permanently damage your health ‘because you lose muscle and your heart and lungs get less efficient’
Two weeks of lounging around at Christmas could permanently damage your health, scientists have warned. Researchers found that just a fortnight of inactivity is enough for the muscles and bones to get weaker and the heart and lungs to become less efficient. They tracked the health of 46 adults – in their 20s and 30s or aged over 60 – who were told to do fewer than 1,500 steps per day for 14 days. And they found the risk was particularly bad for older people, who were likely weaker or in worse health to begin with, and could suffer from 'significant' deterioration. The lazy period also made fat build up around the waist which could make someone more likely to remain fatter for the long term and increase their risk of diabetes, for example. Researchers found that only two weeks of sitting around and doing nothing was enough for people's health to start to decline in ways which could have long-term impacts (stock image) The research team, from the University of … [Read more...] about Lounging around for two weeks over Christmas could permanently damage your health ‘because you lose muscle and your heart and lungs get less efficient’
