“Boris has negotiated in Europe. I seem to remember last time he did a deal with the Germans, he came back with three nearly-new water cannon." A great joke that, and well delivered too, by a woman looking decidedly happy with her lot in life, comfortable in a tartan Vivienne Westwood trouser suit and comfortable in her own skin. Eleven days later she became prime minister, and was never seen or heard from again. Theresa May walked in to 10 Downing Street because the Brexit wing of her party could not work out what they wanted. Three years later, she will walk out again for the same reason. Politicians have a long history of trying and failing to appear normal. One of their favourite pastimes is sharing pictures of themselves in their kitchen in an attempt to show people they're normal folk, but it never seems to work. Times columnist Matt Chorley suggested trying to act normal in the kitchen was a battle politicians were never going to win, writing that the UK's MPs would "get less grief being photographed in a sex dungeon". The latest victim is housing secretary James Brokenshire, who has become embroiled in a strange argument after being criticised for having four ovens, despite insisting he's only got two. It's the great mystery of our time - does Brokenshire have two ovens or four? The Claim People weren't pleased that the MP appeared to have four ovens in his kitchen, with Brokenshire drawing criticism from members of the public who lacked either the space or the money to afford four ovens. Brokenshire's claims that he only had two ovens were met with derision. … [Read more...] about Does MP James Brokenshire have two ovens or four?
Aamer Madhani USA TODAY Published 3:14 PM EDT May 9, 2019 Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced new legislation Thursday to cap credit card interest rates at 15%, a move that they said will help protect consumers from the "greed" of the credit card and banking industries. Sanders, who is vying for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, referred to credit card industry executives as "loan shark hoodlums" in three-piece suits as he outlined the legislation. He also accused the industry of "grotesque and disgusting" behavior. "Let's be clear what we're talking about: We're talking about economic brutality," Sanders said in announcing the plan during a Facebook livestream with Ocasio-Cortez. "We are talking about some of the most powerful people in the world, people who make millions and millions of dollars a year, and banks that make billions of dollars a year in profit. And they see a real profit center in going after desperate … [Read more...] about AOC, Bernie Sanders want to cap credit card interest at 15%
I have epilepsy. Damn, but that was hard. I’m not sure I’ve ever said that before. But then, I’m only just getting used to the idea myself. When the neurologist told me that I was officially epileptic I had to come to terms with fact I had a disability, and unlike all the conditions where they can fix you up, mine had nothing. No cure. No new brain. No real prognosis. “So what does that mean?” I asked the quack. “You might start having lots of seizures or you might never have another one. We don't know. Oh, and you have double the chance of having a massive seizure which will kill you without warning, but it’s only double the miniscule chance of that happening to anyone, so still tiny. “There’s nothing you can do so I wouldn’t worry about it,” he said. Then he shrugged. Of all the things you don’t want to see a doctor do – cry, bite their nails, snap on latex gloves – trust me when I tell you that … [Read more...] about I have epilepsy
Elizabeth Weise USA TODAY Published 6:20 AM EDT Mar 26, 2019 Laura Formisano says she has never felt a huge desire to have children, but she always presumed that would change. Now, married for seven months, she feels climate change could make the planet so uninhabitable, she’s not sure she can bring herself to become a parent. “It almost feels like a con, to bring a child into the world when it’s probably not going to be a place we’re really going to want to live,” says Formisano, 30, who manages a co-working space in Los Angeles. Is the future simply too horrific to bring children into? Some couples, frightened by the prospect of droughts, wars, famines and extinctions brought on by climate change, are making that decision. A Facebook group for women to discuss the idea launched this month, and it's already winning over supporters in Europe and the United States. Conceivable Future, a U.S.-based group, … [Read more...] about Climate change, war, famine, drought makes women not want children
