Dear Coleen I’ve been arguing a lot with my wife over our teenage twins – a boy and girl who are 19. My wife lets them get away with murder and, as a result, I think they’re spoiled and entitled. They’ve just come home from their first year at separate universities and my wife has agreed they can take over our house for a party. I tried to put my foot down and say no way, as the place will be wrecked and we’ll have to fund all the booze and food, but she doesn't see a problem with it. It’s my home too, but I don’t feel as if I have a say in anything – it’s three against one all the time. The last time we had a party, my son’s annoying mates were still drinking at 8am and bothering the neighbours by walking up and down the road, beer cans and cigarettes in hand, and shouting their mouths off. I’ve always believed in respect and discipline, but my wife doesn’t see that giving our kids what they want all the time, … [Read more...] about My wife lets our teen twins do exactly what they want
Disrespectful 19 year old son
To compensate, we've had a couple of family weekends and I have no doubt that, at some point in the future, a holiday will again be on the cards. But for now, he is doing his own thing. And with my middle son having just completed his Leaving Cert, I'm thankful that he and his younger brother (14) are coming away with us as who knows what next year will bring. But deciding whether or not to allow your teen to opt out of the family holiday can cause tension - as mother of three children aged 16, 14 and 11, Dubliner Anne Hassett can attest to. "When I was booking the family holiday, my eldest daughter said she didn't want to come, but I included her anyway as I figured once it was all arranged, it would be fine," she says. "But she is kicking up such a fuss and literally refusing to come. "Every day, we have arguments about it, with plenty of door slamming and tears. My husband says I should just allow her to stay at one of her friends' houses for the fortnight as he believes she will … [Read more...] about Holiday blues: How to cope when the kids ditch the family trip

Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer winner has had an emotional reunion with his estranged dad following his Britain’s Got Talent success. Comic Kojo Anim – favourite to win the show – was put in foster care as a toddler after both parents were jailed. But after his dad saw him on the ITV show, watched by eight million people, he got back in touch. Kojo said: “Just got off the phone with my dad who I have not spoken to in nine years and all it took was for him to call and say he is proud of me and our relationship is now back on track. “This is all bigger than comedy... it’s about peace of mind, happiness, love and family.” Kojo, who is through to the live semi-finals, had a troubled upbringing. He was stunned at 19 when the man who he thought was his dad turned out not to be. When he finally encountered his true father, he said it was surreal. “I meet my real dad who I know nothing about but looks everything like me,” he said. … [Read more...] about Britain’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer act Kojo Anim reunites with dad after 9 years
A bold question indeed...and one I’m not altogether comfortable posing, for fear of disrespecting those who have worn the blue and white with distinction over the years. But it’s been something I’ve been mulling over for a good while now.And with every passing week, I’m finding it harder and harder to mount a case against.First things first, let’s get one thing crystal clear: I’m not saying Reece James is the greatest player ever to play for the club. That would be a monumental insult to the likes Arjan de Zeeuw, Andy Liddell, Emmerson Boyce, Roberto Martinez, Graeme Jones to name just five.Genuine Latics legends, on and off the field, for a sustained period of time, who deserve to be revered for as long as the club is in existence.I’m talking specifically about being the finest footballer, in terms of ability, quality, raw talent.I’ve always put forward Antonio Valencia as the ‘best’ player I’ve seen in a Latics … [Read more...] about Could Reece James be the finest player ever to turn out for Wigan Athletic?
