Stripping families of £20-a-week in Universal Credit will plunge 420,000 children into poverty, researchers warn. The Government announced a temporary hike in its flagship welfare payment last March to help hard-up households battle the coronavirus crisis. The rise is worth £1,040 a year for six million households but costs the Treasury £6billion annually. It is due to be axed at the end of next month. Chancellor Rishi Sunak is under mounting pressure to extend the rise beyond April when he delivers his Budget on March 3. Research by the House of Commons Library, seen by the Mirror, shows 420,000 kids would fall into relative poverty after housing costs are calculated if it is scrapped. A briefing note issued by Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck and Feeding Britain director Andrew Forsey says the £20-a-week UC lift “has offered some protection against poverty and hunger for millions of people”. Police in British Columbia, Canada are searching for the head of Queen Elizabeth II after a statue of the monarch was decapitated by vandals. 'Investigators are asking for those with information to come forward after the Queen Elizabeth II statue in Beacon Hill Park was 'beheaded' in an act of vandalism,' police in Victoria said in a statement. 'The head has not been recovered.' The statue, a version of a bust first erected in 1960, was vandalized overnight on Tuesday, at roughly the same time the city's nearby bylaw offices were targeted with graffiti reading 'Support Beacon Hill', 'Stop Lying' and 'FU Pig'. Niger's post-election unrest — during which at least two people have been killed — threatens to dent the presidency of Mohamed Bazoum, even before he is officially inaugurated. The February 21 runoff vote was expected to usher in Niger's first democratic transition of power since the West African nation gained independence from France in 1960. Trouble at the top But Niger's interior minister, Alkache Alhada, has accused one of Niger's most popular opposition figures, Hama Amadou, of wanting to usurp power by "setting fire" to Niger. The government has vowed to arrest and prosecute Amadou, whom they allege is complicit in murder, violence, racist remarks and xenophobia. Amadou, a former prime minister and speaker of the assembly, was barred by the electoral commission from running for the presidency due to a 2017 conviction on charges of child trafficking for which he was sentenced to a one-year jail term. Piers Corbyn has again been arrested at an anti-lockdown protest, held in defiance of orders banning public gatherings in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus conspiracy theorist, 73, was pictured in handcuffs being led away by Metropolitan Police officers in Bishops Park, Fulham, West London , on Saturday. The brother of former Labour leader Jeremy was among dozens of people who had gathered to protest against the current lockdown . Other images showed people dancing in front of a banner which read, 'Let London Live' and was supportive of Corbyn's campaign to become London mayor. And a video filmed as police intervened showed protesters shouting 'shame on you' at officers as they surrounded Corbyn, who was holding a microphone. The chancellor is set to announce the Budget on Wednesday nearly a year after the country was placed under a national lockdown. Huge parts of the the economy remain closed and families are feeling the strain as at least 150,000 jobs have been lost to the pandemic . The specific details of the Budget remain unclear but the announcement is expected to include a swathe of actions aimed at kickstarting the UK economy as restrictions ease. Sky News spoke to three people in different financial circumstances about how they hope the Budget will help them. 'We're scraping money together' Advertisement Dan Kelly, 29, and Annie May, 22, are hoping the chancellor's announcement will make it easier for them to get on the housing ladder.
