Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigerian economist and former finance minister, has been appointed to head the World Trade Organization, becoming the first African and woman to helm the global trade body. Okonjo-Iweala takes over as the global trade body struggles to remain relevant amid growing protectionism and trade tensions and an economic crisis unleashed by the coronavirus pandemic. From reviving WTO's dispute settlement process to policing China, the new director-general has her task cut out as she looks to restore global faith in the trade body. "What it [the WTO] needs is someone who has the capability to drive reform, who knows trade and who does not want to see business as usual. And that is me," she said. Okonjo-Iweala said her top priority would be to deal with the economic and health fallouts of the pandemic. WTO members should accelerate efforts to lift export restrictions on medical supplies and vaccines. "The WTO can contribute so much more to helping stop the … [Read more...] about Daunting challenges await WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Earl of Lauderdale’s fury over National Trust ‘slavery’ slur on ancestor
The sumptuous Ham House in Richmond, South-West London , is described as a rare surviving example of '17th century luxury and taste'. But that hasn't prevented it from becoming the setting for a full-scale punch-up between Ian Maitland, 18th Earl of Lauderdale, and the National Trust. At stake is the reputation of the first and last Duke of Lauderdale, who, together with his wife, is credited with transforming Ham into one of the grandest houses in Stuart England — but who, the Trust now alleges, enriched himself via the slave trade. Ian Maitland, a direct descendant of the Duke's younger brother, derides the allegation as 'rubbish scholarship'. In particular, he highlights claims made on a placard now installed at Ham in the Duke's Dressing Room. Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status
Amnesty International said on Wednesday that it no longer recognizes jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny as a "prisoner of conscience." The global rights watchdog cited the politician's past "advocacy of hatred" as the reason behind its decision. It, however, did not mention any specific remarks made by him in the past. At the start of his political career a decade ago, Navalny drew criticism for his anti-immigrant statements. "Some of these comments, which Navalny has not publicly denounced, reach the threshold of advocacy of hatred, and this is at odds with Amnesty's definition of a prisoner of conscience," the London-based NGO said. Watch video 00:37 Borrell: 'We have to sanction the people who are directly related with his arrest' Amnesty continues to call for Navalny's release Over the past few years, Navalny has emerged as Russia's leading critic of President Vladimir Putin by publishing investigations into corruption and leading … [Read more...] about Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status

Following one of the bloodiest outbreaks of prison violence in the country's history, authorities regained control of the facilities in three cities after raids by hundreds of police officers and military personnel. According to reports, coordinated fights broke out in the maximum-security wings as rival gangs fought for leadership within the detention centres. Authorities have said the clashes that began on Monday night were sparked by weapons searches. The national agency responsible for the prisons said at least 79 inmates had died, including 37 inmates in the Pacific coast city of Guayaquil, 34 in the southern city of Cuenca, and eight in the central city of Latacunga.
