By Brian Wheeler Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid - who quit the cabinet within minutes of each other in protest at Boris Johnson's leadership - look like political allies right now, but they are also friends. They both rose from modest beginnings to make a fortune in investment banking, before entering politics. There is also a shared love of Star Wars - and they haven't been afraid to hide it. When Mr Javid resigned as chancellor in February 2020, after losing a power struggle with Mr Johnson's former adviser Dominic Cummings, he tweeted about his successor: "The Force is strong in young Sunak." Just over a year earlier, when he was still number two to Mr Javid at the Treasury, Mr Sunak tweeted a picture of the pair of them at the cinema, where they had just been to see The Rise of Skywalker. Ukraine War: Chernobyl staff rotate after working 27 days
Live Updates Today is Day 26 of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine rejects Russia's ultimatum in Mariupol . Russia said people could leave the besieged port city if they surrendered. About 300,000 are trapped. Strategically important Mariupol has been turned to rubble with weeks of Russian shelling, with 90 percent of buildings estimated to be damaged. Olena Zelenska , Ukraine's first lady, tells citizens in the city: "Please hold on, dear people, I beg you." In Kyiv, shelling that struck a shopping mall has reportedly left eight dead. Across Ukraine, about 10 million have fled their homes, according to the United Nations' refugee agency; about 3.4 million traveled abroad . Joe Biden will seek to rally U.S. allies in Europe this week, speaking with leaders in Germany, Britain, France, and Italy later Monday. What did Brittney Griner do in Russia? Charges against WNBA star explained
On Monday, U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner appealed to President Joe Biden to secure her release from jail in Russia, admitting in a handwritten letter that she was "terrified" that she might remain behind bars forever. Griner, a 31-year-old Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) all-star and two-time Olympic gold medallist, was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport on February 17 on charges of carrying vape cartridges that contained hashish oil in her luggage. Hashish oil is illegal in Russia, despite it being decriminalized in many U.S. states. She could face a sentence of up to 10 years in jail. Her incarceration comes at a time of high tensions between Washington and Moscow over the Ukraine war. Griner was entering Moscow to play in Russia's Premier League during her WNBA offseason. The Biden administration has said that Griner is "wrongfully detained", while the basketball star's wife Cherelle told Good Morning America in May that … [Read more...] about What did Brittney Griner do in Russia? Maybe Ridding the World of Superheroes Isn’t Such a Bad Idea
By far the most arresting character in Thor: Love and Thunder , the twenty-bajillionth Marvel movie, is the splendidly named villain Gorr the God Butcher. Bald, covered in scars, and draped in monklike robes, Gorr (played by Christian Bale) is a vengeful wraith who wields a mystical blade and has only one goal in mind: killing gods. Any deity he can get his hands on, no matter the faith or civilization they belong to. Gorr’s philosophy is that these immortal beings have grown complacent, doing nothing to help their followers and instead basking in their faded glory. His solution is simple: total annihilation. He may well have the right idea. Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, gods are merely another brand of hero, superhumans imbued with ancient powers for unknown reasons. Thor may be a real Norse deity, but he’s also a caped, lantern-jawed hunk played by Chris Hemsworth who counts Captain America and the Hulk among his best pals. Love and Thunder is Thor’s fourth solo movie, … [Read more...] about Maybe Ridding the World of Superheroes Isn’t Such a Bad Idea
F1 22 speeds straight to UK number one – Games charts 2 July
With no other new entries to get in the way, EA’s new Formula One game has taken pole position in the latest UK top 10. This continues to be one of the worst summers ever for major new video game releases but the yearly launch of the latest F1 game has been at least one highlight, in terms of both sales and critical reception . The new game had no trouble debuting at number one, with 71% of sales going to the PlayStation versions. Although, as a general rule, Xbox owners tend to buy games digitally more than their PlayStation counterparts. There were no other new entries in the top 40, with the release of Monster Hunter Rise expansion Sunbreak failing to have any significant impact on the parent game’s sales – even though there is a retail bundle as well. Games Inbox: Single-player games under threat, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and inFamous apathy
The Monday letters page thinks there should be more family friendly video games, as one reader doubts there’ll be a F-Zero comeback. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] True to form single-player tweet that they had the director of God Of War berating them, not to mention the boss of their own Respawn studio! It’s even funnier given they were trying to be hip with the kids by carrying on a TikTok meme. I do feel sorry for whatever low level schlub actually wrote the tweet though and how they just automatically connected EA with not liking single-player games. What can you really except given how often EA has talked them down? Even though two of its biggest upcoming games – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the Dead Space remake – have no multiplayer at all. Single-player will always be under threat as long as multiplayer is more profitable but at the moment things seem to be going pretty well. At the moment, my main concern is … [Read more...] about Games Inbox: Single-player games under threat, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and inFamous apathy
15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Columbia Pictures, Focus Features, Eureka Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Disney Even if you spent your summers on the couch watching reruns of The Price Is Right with your babysitter Sonia who smelled like sweat and cheese balls stuck in braces instead of going to summer camp, everyone knows what camp feels like, thanks to the tons of summer-camp movies and TV shows (remember Salute Your Shorts ?) that we’ve seen over the years. With summer fully here, we thought it time we revisit some of those camps. What makes a summer-camp movie great has less to do with the experience of applying bug spray and learning to swim in the lake, and more to do with celebrating childhood, rebellion, groups of scrappy outsiders pitted against the more popular, and like-minded people banding together to make something impossible and wonderful happen. (Most of them have first kisses, too, thanks to all those girlfriends at summer camp that the other kids … [Read more...] about 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
