Government ‘considering cuts to employment and support allowance’
The government is considering cutting the value of the main employment and support allowance (ESA) sickness benefit by as much as £30 so that it is effectively worth the same as jobseeker’s allowance, internal documents seen by the BBC suggest. New claimants, judged to be capable of work with appropriate support, could be given only 50p more per week than people on jobseeker’s allowance (JSA). The Department for Work and Pensions said the ESA proposals were not government policy, but that they reflected ministers’ search for a solution to the backlog of claims for ESA and its higher than forecast cost. George Osborne, the chancellor, has said he is seeking a £12bn cut in the welfare bill, and has so far identified a quarter of these cuts, mainly through freezing the value of most benefits for two years. The DWP has been struggling with ESA ever since it replaced incapacity benefit. The main contractor, Atos, quit the contract for assessing claimants after a … [Read more...] about Government ‘considering cuts to employment and support allowance’
Councils will slash emergency welfare schemes if ministers cut £175m grant
Almost three-quarters of local authorities will abandon or scale back welfare schemes designed to provide emergency help for England’s most vulnerable citizens from next April because of government funding cuts, ministers have been warned. Tens of thousands of people – including victims of domestic violence, care-leavers, homeless people and low-income families in crisis for a range of reasons from flooding and fire to benefit sanctions – will receive little or no state help as a result. One in six councils say they would be unable to afford to run a crisis safety net scheme at all if the government presses ahead with plans to cancel its £175m a year local welfare grant from next year, effectively wrecking a cornerstone of the coalition’s welfare reforms just two years after it was introduced. Many vulnerable people would be forced to turn to food banks and loan sharks as a consequence, say campaigners, while the removal of crisis help from vulnerable … [Read more...] about Councils will slash emergency welfare schemes if ministers cut £175m grant
Benefit cuts bite down on the poor and disabled as poll tax spectre reappears
Unlucky for some is an understatement, at the dawn of financial new year 2013. The cuts are coming so thick and fast, that for many April will feel like a slap round the face with a cold fish. Perhaps there are families out there who will be hit by all the welfare "reforms" at once, but I'd soon run out of fish if I tried to describe one, so let's concentrate on two groups … First up, hard-up renters are about to discover that they really can't win. Where their family is too big they face an arbitrary new benefit cap; where it is deemed too small for a council house they face the "bedroom tax". This supposedly targets "under-occupation" after children leave home, so – just to make sure that these families are screwed every which way – the government has ramped up charges that apply when grown-up kids return to the nest. Oh, and even if such a family relents and moves, its will soon discover that housing benefit no longer rises in line with anything as material as … [Read more...] about Benefit cuts bite down on the poor and disabled as poll tax spectre reappears
