Diane Abbott clashed with Piers Morgan when he grilled her on the Labour Party's immigration policy this morning. The shadow home secretary said she welcomed Amber Rudd 's resignation in the wake of the Windrush scandal. The fiasco has been particularly damaging for the Tories because the policies which led to it were put in place when Theresa May was Home Secretary. But Piers decided to turn the spotlight on the Labour Party's policy on immigration, pressing her an answer six times. Asked on Good Morning Britain whether she would back an amnesty on people who’ve been here for over 10 years as reportedly backed by foreign secretary Boris Johnson, Ms Abbott said: “The Labour party isn’t calling for an amnesty, no. "We’re calling for fair rules and reasonable management of migration.” Piers then pushed Labour's home affairs chief suggesting that her policy would see perhaps as many as a million people be deported. But she said: “That is not … [Read more...] about Piers Morgan asks Diane Abbott the same question six times on GMB
DIANE Abbott today repeatedly refused to say what she wants to happen to illegal immigrants in another car-crash interview. The bungling Labour MP told Piers Morgan she doesn’t want an amnesty - but also suggested she wouldn’t kick out every illegal migrant from Britain. Pressed on the issue, Ms Abbott refused six times to lay out exactly what her solution would be if she got into power. The disastrous interview came on ITV’s Good Morning Britain today in the wake of Amber Rudd’s resignation as Home Secretary. Ms Abbott, the shadow home secretary, claimed Ms Rudd and Theresa May had caused the Windrush crisis thanks to their strict policies on migration. But she dismissed calls for an amnesty to allow 1million illegal migrants to stay in Britain permanently. Asked if that means she wants to boot out all of them, Ms Abbott said only: “What I’m saying to you is that the immigration department is not fit for purpose, that is why many of these issues … [Read more...] about Diane Abbott repeatedly refuses to say what should happen to illegal migrants in car-crash interview with Piers Morgan
LABOUR Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott stood down days before the 2017 snap General Election due to ill health, which was later revealed to be type 2 diabetes. She has since returned to the front bench and is a long-time ally and friend of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. She regularly speaks out against online abuse, which she and other MPs are victims of. Here's her story... Who is Diane Abbott? What's her background? Born in London to Jamaican immigrants, Ms Abbott, 64, read history at Cambridge University before becoming a trainee at the Home Office. She worked as a race relations officer for the National Council for Civil Liberties before joining Thames Television. She was later a press officer at the Greater London Council and Lambeth Council before moving into politics herself. After a brief stint at Westminster City Council, Abbott was elected into the House of Commons in 1987, becoming the UK’s first black woman MP. She was a stern critic of Harriet Harman when she … [Read more...] about How old is Diane Abbott, did the Shadow Home Secretary used to date Jeremy Corbyn and how long has she been a Labour MP?
Interviewing someone who is famous for being the one who asks questions is a rather strange scenario, especially when those questions include: “Where in Britain did the Romans come from?”, “How did Sir Walter Raleigh invent the potato?” and “Who is your favourite member of One Direction?”. For just over half a decade, Diane Morgan has been the face of said question-poser: the brutally honest and comically uneducated Philomena Cunk. Taking over the screen with mockumentaries about William Shakespeare and Christmas, she’s now been granted a full-blown spin-off series that tackles the whole country. It's called Cunk on Britain. Charlie Brooker, back when he was better known for fronting Weekly Wipe as opposed to Channel 4-turned-Netflix series Black Mirror, introduced Morgan's character into his comedy review show alongside fellow joke persona Barry Shitpeas. “They were going to have a posh Philomena Cunk,” admits … [Read more...] about Diane Morgan on playing Philomena Cunk: ‘People can’t see the funny side of Brexit’
4 The walking, talking television historian is enjoying a golden age. If it isn't Lucy Worsley donning a wimple to illustrate a point about Henry VIII, then our screens are basking in the plummy glow of Simon Schama on Civilisations, ambling through an Istanbul mosque saying something complicated about 14th-century masonry. Decades from now, someone will probably make a very clever 13-part documentary about them all. In the meantime, we have Cunk on Britain (BBC Two). "Britain stands at a fork in its cross roads," intoned presenter Philomena Cunk, against an obligatory backdrop of ye olde mist-shrouded hills. "The best way to find out where Britain's heading is to look behind us into something called history." It was a joke of course – the latest excursion by the Ali G-meets-bored hotel receptionist alter ego of actress and comedian Diane Morgan (last seen as a sardonic single mother on Sharon Horgan's Motherland). Like all the best … [Read more...] about Cunk on Britain, episode 1 review: Diane Morgan delivers her lines with a face so straight you could use it as a spirit level
