A former Labour councillor is standing in Hastings and Rye as the Brexit Party’s general election candidate. Conservative MP Amber Rudd retained her seat by just 346 votes, narrowly holding off Labour council leader Peter Chowney back in 2017.In the run up to the next general election former Brighton and Hove city councillor Tom Bewick has been chosen as the Brexit Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Hastings and Rye.While on the authority he chaired the children, young people and skills committee, but left Labour earlier this year citing anti-Semitism, Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and Brexit.Mr Bewick, who chaired the official Vote Leave campaign in Brighton and Hove, said he was ‘delighted’ to stand for the Brexit Party in Hastings and Rye, where the majority of voters backed leaving the European Union in 2016.He criticised Ms Rudd for backing the ‘failed’ Withdrawal Agreement three times, which he argued would ‘deliver Brexit … [Read more...] about Brexit Party chooses Hastings and Rye election candidate

Activists have been touring the doorsteps issuing heartfelt promises to repair potholes and collect bins faster. It’s been a familiar script – the Tories accuse Labour of waste, and Labour accuse the Tories of cutting services. Something that’s been conspicuously absent though, is any mention of the two main party’s leaders. Mr S was curious to see how prominent Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn were featuring in the campaign literature in this election, but after a search of over 50 randomly selected election leaflets, failed to find a single mention of either of them over the past two months. New ward boundaries mean that every seat in every ward is up for election on Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (RBBC) in May. Currently, the Conservatives hold a commanding majority with 39 of the council's 50 seats. Residents' Associations in Nork and Tattenhams are second with a combined six councillors. Each ward will be electing three councillors, meaning that residents will be required to vote for three candidates. The new makeup of RBBC will consist of 45 councillors. Polls open at 7am on May 2 and close at 10pm, with the votes counted the next day. In addition, seats on Horley Town Council and on Salfords and Sidlow Parish Council will be contested so residents in those areas will have more choices to make. Just for fun...
