A Plymouth university student took his own life after suffering from depression for several years, an inquest has heard. Ashif Alucin, 20, was discovered dead in his room at Gilwell Hall's of Residence on Tavistock Place on the morning of December 10 last year. Originally from south London, Ashif was studying psychology at the University of Plymouth. An inquest held at Plymouth Coroner's Court on Tuesday heard how Ashif had been battling ongoing depression since at least 2016, and had been on medication to treat the problem. A pathologist confirmed that Ashif was a fit young man who did not have any other health problems, while a toxicology report returned negative results. Georgetown University students have voted to pay a $27 (£20) per semester fee in reparations to the descendants of slaves sold by the elite institution in the 1800s. The 'Reconciliation Contribution' fee would create one of the first reparation funds of its kind in the US and provide money for the education of the slaves' descendants. The creation of the fund was approved in a student referendum run by the Georgetown University Student Association (GUSA) with 2,541 voting in favour of the measure while 1,304 opposed it. It would levy a $27 fee on students each semester to create a fund for the descendants of 272 slaves sold by the university's Jesuit founders in 1838 to pay off debt. If they succeed in getting the fund created, it would raise more than $400,000 (£306,000) in its first year, based on the university's current undergraduate enrollment figures. A proposal by Queen’s University students for police to be excluded from the university campus unless there is a “real threat” was withdrawn last night. Two Nottingham Trent University students have died in a crash. Philippa Bertram, 20, from Darlington and Rebecca Ward, 22, from Worcester were travelling on the A628, Woodhead Pass near Barnsley on Saturday, December 15, when they were involved in a collision. At around 1.30pm their white Fiat 500 was involved in a crash with a blue Mini Cooper. South Yorkshire Police confirmed the final year Fashion Marketing and Branding students had died on Wednesday, December 19.
