An unknown British actor beat the likes of Bradley Cooper and Bill Nighy to win a Tony Award last night - despite being rejected from UK drama schools. Alex Sharp, 26, took home the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his role as as a gifted mathematician with Asperger's syndrome, in The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time. Beating fellow nominees including Bradley Cooper and Bill Nighy, he has made a name for himself in Hollywood almost overnight. As in awe of the achievement as the rest of the world, Alex tweeted after: "Holy f*** I just won a Tony." "Oh my God, this is so crazy," he also said in his acceptance speech. "Oh jeez. This time last year I picked up my diploma, graduating from Juilliard, so to be holding this is insane." He later thanked producers for "taking a chance on a blank resumé". The actor added: "This play is about a young person who is different and who is misunderstood and I just want to dedicate this to any young person out there … [Read more...] about ‘Holy f*** I just won a Tony’: Meet unknown Brit who beat Bradley Cooper to top spot
You walk up many flights of stairs to reach Celia Paul’s flat, but the climb is worth it. The windows of her studio and bedroom look down on the courtyard and facade of the British Museum. All the world and its history, in every available London light, is just across the street. Paul has lived and painted here – the two things are inseparable in her mind – since 1982, when she discovered this place with Lucian Freud, her then lover and the father of her only child, Frank, also a painter. “When we first came to look,” she recalls, “the entrance was at the back and the place seemed a bit dingy. It had been bedsits and there were gas fires where you put coins in the meter, but then we came in here and saw these windows and we were just overwhelmed. Lucian put down the cash deposit immediately.” Paul, who will turn 60 next month, rented the flat for a couple of years before the landlord offered it for sale. Freud bought it for her for £75,000, … [Read more...] about Celia Paul on life after Lucian Freud: ‘I had to make this story my own’
Gerwyn Price became the latest high-profile casualty at the PDC world darts championship on Friday, letting a 2-0 lead slip as he lost to the world No 73, Nathan Aspinall. The Welsh No 6 seed was seen by many as an outside chance to reach the final after his victory over Gary Anderson at the Grand Slam of Darts, and looked to be cruising into the third round after winning both of the first two sets 3-2. Price had a match dart at the bullseye in the third set, but missed – and then saw the outsider clean up a 91 checkout to snatch the set. That marked a dramatic turnaround as Aspinall took six of the next seven legs to stun Price and delight the Alexandra Palace crowd. “I can’t describe the way I’m feeling now,” Aspinall told Sky Sports. “I’m so, so happy. It’s unreal. At 2-0 down, I still believed in myself. Now, hopefully, I can go deep in the competition.” Price has divided opinion with his aggressive on-stage demeanour, and … [Read more...] about Gerwyn Price beaten by Nathan Aspinall as PDC world darts shocks continue

So when she was dogged by a persistent cough six years ago, she sucked on some lozenges and hoped for the best. My mum and friend insisted I needed to go to a hospital.’ At the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, the feverish mum-of-one was rushed straight through to a medic. It turned out she had acute pneumonia which, … [Read more...] about Mum who sucked lozenges for persistent cough loses all four limbs
