Bonmarché profits tank as fewer people go to its stores
Budget women’s fashion chain Bonmarché is famous for it’s plus size outfits but it’s seen profits slim down dramatically as it becomes the latest business well and truly dragged into the retail carnage gripping the high street. The company – which has branches across the South West including Plymouth – saw profits nearly cut in half in the first six months of the year as weak consumer sentiment and lower footfall stung the struggling retailer. The womenswear chain’s pre-tax profits tumbled 45 per cent to £2.3million in the half-year to September 29, 2018, despite revenue nudging up to £97.9million from £97.8million. Online sales were up 28.9 per cent but store like-for-like sales fell four per cent amid what chief executive Helen Connolly said was "general weaker consumer sentiment and footfall seen across the market". Fenwick scraps its store card amid plans to launch new loyalty scheme for customers
Newcastle retail chain Fenwick is scrapping its store card following a “steady decline” in the number of its users. The Fenwick store card is the retailer’s in-house credit card, and can currently be used to pay for items in all Fenwick and Bentalls department stores. However, customers who shop regularly are being informed their cards will no longer be accepted in stores from August 31 2018. Customers now have just over a week to use their cards, but some customers were only informed during the middle of August. The credit card itself will remain open and customers have been told they will not need to repay any outstanding balance immediately. The letter, signed by Fenwick CEO Robbie Feather, said: “I am writing to inform you that we have decided to cease the Fenwick Store Card. Debenhams launches in-store gyms with money off beauty products with memberships
IF you fancy going shopping and getting a workout all in one go, Debenhams' might have the perfect solution. The department store will be opening gyms in three of its shops this year, kicking off in Sutton. It has partnered with fitness operators Sweat! Gyms to allow its shoppers the ultimate workout without even leaving the store. Even better, the retailer is planning on giving shoppers who regularly work out up to £100 worth of incentives. Anyone who signs up to the new gyms will get access to the retailer's Beauty Club reward scheme. You'll can also get preloaded cards to redeem against purchases. The agency announced an effort targeting credit card "skimmers" hidden at fuel pumps to steal financial information — and finances — from unsuspecting motorists. The initiative, unfolding this week ahead of Independence Day travels, has agents inspecting pumps in 21 states. "The Secret Service is leading the charge to protect the U.S. consumer against this growing cyber-enabled financial crime," the agency said Tuesday in a statement, reporting a Memorial Day effort last month that turned up over 70 such skimmers.
