British, German tourists deny smuggling antiquities in Iraq court

May 15, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

A British and a German tourist accused of smuggling ancient shards out of Iraq have appeared in a Baghdad court in yellow detainees' uniforms, telling judges they had not acted with criminal intent and had no idea they might have broken local laws. The trial of Jim Fitton, 66, is grabbing international attention at a time when Iraq seeks to open up its nascent tourism sector. The session also revealed first details about a second defendant, identified as Volker Waldmann of Germany. The three-judge panel in Baghdad’s felony court scheduled the next hearing for May 22. The court must determine whether the defendants had sought to profit by taking the 12 items, which were found in their possession as they attempted to fly out of Baghdad airport on March 20. Ukraine blasts U.N. “censorship” after report it banned words in dispatches

March 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A Ukrainian official criticized the United Nations after news broke that it allegedly censored words like "invasion" and "war" among its staff. Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Tuesday that it's "hard to believe" that the United Nations could impose this kind of censorship. As Russia continues to censor similar words from its own media and outside media and bring consequences such as jail time for those who do, the U.N.'s alleged censorship has sparked backlash. "I urge the UN to swiftly refute such reports if they are false," Kuleba wrote. "UN reputation [is] at stake." Naomi O'Leary, a journalist for the Irish Times, reported on the alleged censorship after she said she obtained an email the U.N. Department of Global Communications reportedly sent to staff that told them to use the terms "conflict" or "military offensive" instead of "war" or "invasion." Kuleba likened the alleged censorship to the kind currently happening in Russia. … [Read more...] about Ukraine blasts U.N. “censorship” after report it banned words in dispatches

September 20, 2020 by www.dailystar.co.uk

Richard Keys has denied receiving cash for video message after being spotted on Cameo with a controversial comment in his biography. The website allows celebrities to charge fans varying amounts for short clips, but the presenter has now claimed that he changed his mind over the collaboration before accepting any requests. The 63-year-old was the face of football coverage on Sky Sports between 1992 and 2011, but left the company after he was found to have made a string of derogatory comments while off-air. Keys has since apologised for the behaviour, that he has described as "banter". One of those comments included the question ‘would you smash it’, which was used on his Cameo profile to try and entice users to pay for a clip. His profile on the site read: "Richard Keys, sports presenter. Let's 'smash it' together and have a bit of banter." Keys has now issued a response by noting that he backed out of the deal before being paid.
